What is the opinion of Houzz about composite outdoor decking?
Comments (6)Timber all the way!!! The look and feel of real timber under your feet cannot be matched. Depending on the size of the deck, paying a professional every few years to refinish the deck is not that costly and worth it in my opinion. I recently had to refinish a hardwood deck for a client and it was a huge area. It only cost $1200 for labour and materials and took only one day to do. the benefit of timber is that if you like the idea of changing the colour at some point, you can! This is not possible with composites. Just make sure you do your research as to the best type of timber for your needs....See MoreNew timber deck
Comments (12)I have just gone through the same decision making process. I rejected the composites due to cost, scratching, smell, and how much heat they emit. I rejected merbau due to leaching of the tannins, unsustainable harvesting practices (despite what is preached), and the threat to orangutang habitats. I chose spotted gum for looks (more brown than red), reasonable cost, easy maintenance, and it is Australian grown and produced. There will be those who disagree with my decision, but at the end of the day I wanted a reasonably priced but attractive, durable, and low maintenance decking board. It takes longer to lay the hardwoods such as spotted gum as they have to be pre-drilled, but the total extra for a 5m x 5m deck was $1000 for labour / timber compared to merbau. A quick oil once a year is the only maintenance. Pinterest is a good resource for how they all look once down....See MoreHardwood Timber Decking or Composite Decking?
Comments (3)Composite decking such as Modwood is much more practical! Timber is a lovely natural material, however you have to finish it and then worry about the maintenance down the track. If you want to avoid stains leaching everywhere than composite decking is definitely the answer. As an initial outlay, it is 2-3 times more expensive.... You will get this cost back down the track when you don't have to refinish it every 12 months!...See MoreComposite decking in full sun
Comments (2)our composite decking was light coloured and did get hot under bare feet but i think dark wood will do the same and you have all that maintenance....best way to test the difference would be to obtain a few samples of the different products and lay them out in the same position as they'll be installed ( suspended the correct distance above the ground etc on suitable support to include the expected air spaces all around)...See More- 8 years ago
