Help, our lounge/dining room is just not working.
This room has had me stumped since we moved in a year ago. The half double height & the placement of stairs, railings, that fireplace etc have had us wondering how to make it work since we moved in. We made quick decisions about the lounge, black chair and rug when we moved in and would like to keep them, although don't love them, but can't justify replacing them. We also like the dining table, but the chairs need to be recovered or replaced (a gumtree purchase that they wouldn't seperate from the table). Everything else is fair game, we have a lot in here that we loved at our old house, but has not worked in this one. Some of my ideas are a darker wall behind the tv? Possibly flowing through into the dining area? Floating shelves over the black chair (& replacing the bent old lamp for sure). Changing the giant fabric piece behind the table to something that works better? Or bringing its colours into the room. Incorporating the fireplace colours? We will never use it, but it is there and I can't imagine removing it, because it looks structural on the plans.

Comments (10)Bold choices but it looks like a waiting room with all of the pieces lining the walls. Your drum chandy over the dining table is too small scale. Needs to be 1/2 the width of your table and hang 36" or less above it. The one you have now would look good hanging with the portrait of the girl above the buffet or in a powder room or foyer. Lower all your art. Free standing art with centers at 60" above the floor. Pieces with furniture 4-6" above the piece they're with. Don't hang a mirror in the dining room unless it will reflect something beautiful or interesting like the view from one of your windows. Turn your rug the other direction and put the sofa on it perpendicular to the division between the two windows. It should face the single window. Flank the sofa with the two striped chairs, facing each other over the table you have in the corner. Try the striped bench/hassock in the corner where the table was. Raise the curtain rods to the ceiling. If the curtains are too short to kiss the floor, add a wide bold panel to the bottoms in the bright orange of your pillows. I think you should add a fun element like a bright orange bean bag chair on the floor in front of the window. Small designer furniture is what comes to mind. 2 seater sofa, lamp table, floor rug, small coffee table and a TV entertainment unit that fits the common wall at the kitchen end. Light coloured furniture & decor and the clever use of wall lighting will help make the room seem larger. The good thing is you can spend up big on the small amount of things you need to buy. Comments (16)Hi Adriana, your room is very nice (love your rug and coffee table). My only suggestion is that it does feels as though the room is overcrowded with too much of the SAME furniture ie. the grey, tufted pieces. Changing out your 2-seater for something in leather would really warm the space and add interest (I'd choose a brown tone to blend with your lovely buffet there) - I would also perhaps recover the ottoman in a different fabric, something you love that adds a touch more colour and your unique personality to the space. As you said you enjoy interior styling, and your flair for it shows already, I'm sure you can create a stunning room with just a few changes. 7 years agoThanks for your comments. Above is the full floor plan. (We removed the wall in the back gym/linen room to make it a regular room again). It is a bit of a late 70s design special, with the original owner bringing in a few different eras to make her dream home. (If we were doing things over I would love to remove the wall between the dining and meals area and put some sort of internal stacking doors/walls there. We love having the little breakfast nook area, but it would be awesome to have matching tables in both areas that you could bring together to make a super long table for big dinners. That isn't on the cards at the moment though)

7 years agoI reckon your TV/entertainment unit looks too small overall, and is not balanced. A built in shelving unit on the entire wall would be cool but might be pricey. Agree about changing the wall colour too, too much white with curtains white as well? What about a cool statement lamp in the corner behind the black chair? Something like this maybe in marimekko fabric like your art.
