How to make brown aluminium Windows look better?
Comments (12)Honestly, cladding the house in grey because it is trendy right now is only going to date your renovations and is not going to do anything special to the house. What is the finish on the house now? I'm assuming you are cladding to save on maintenance which is very wise, but if you paint the windows you are only going to start another maintenance issue. The finish on them now has been designed to last - paint won't. I also note you have brown posts on the verandas, brown/cream tiles on the ground and a cream fence - this all has to be taken into consideration if you want to change to a grey palette and achieve something really special. It has to be a total package. Unfortunately, colours do not reproduce on computer screens so there is no point in me suggesting colours, but I would call in a cladding specialist or 3, they are used to doing this type of work and generally know what the finished result will look like to advise you. They should be able to suggest colours that will blend better with the browns and creams but still give the house a more individual and timeless look. If you are still not sure, put the photos of your house onto a Paint Company's website and paint it in a similar colour. To me though, this house really needs some softening, I think a bit of a cottage look will make it look much more warmer and welcoming. It is just not blending in with its environment. Work on your landscaping - look on Houzz for some ideas for a front path to lift your home out of the ordinary, you don't have to spend a fortune, just be creative, change the hand railing, maybe even fence the veranda or grow a hedge in front of it and screen one (or both) ends of it to give you some privacy to sit out there, Perhaps grow a creeper across under the guttering to really soften the front of the house and make the veranda more welcoming. Beautiful, well kept lawns and gardens and some special outdoor areas in your back garden will really enhance the house so the brown windows will cease to become an issue....See MoreLooking for feedback on draft reno plans please
Comments (40)before i draw your latest sketch here's another version "already prepared earlier" that might be worth considering (btw i strongly advise that you consult local council before we assume that re-building on the boundary is legal as building on the boundary creates major problem for any roof and proper drainage)... you will notice i've added extra separation between the kitchen and toilets and there's space for a tall narrow window into the courtyard from the bathroom (although any window in the pantry would be best as a narrow splash back with external shutters for a view to the courtyard without hot western sun) and your kitchen servery window photo is idealand this is the closest photo i could find for the north window and here is a suggestion for the new roof that would echo the roof of the main house and include the north facing clerestory window and raked ceiling..the 3d "view" is a very rough approximation of the north facing window over the kitchen but angles of the new roof, ceiling height and number of steps down to the extension will be subject to careful on site measurement...See Morelooking for some ideas
Comments (13)Matt, define your specific requirements, then people can assist with advice as to how to potentially achieve those requirements....honestly, the sky's the limit, what you need to define at the start is (a) what you want (b) how much you want to spend. Then you can start to nut out the how ......I'm always conscious of and advise to ensure you achieve net overall gains/value adding, with any decision so knocking down walls may be a gain on opening up, but you may reduce spatial flexibility/zoning.....if you build in a garage to gain a bedroom or extra living, what affect would this hypothetically have on property value? Is that important to you or not? You get clear on this stuff & why you need to either change or add something, then the answers become relatively straightforward. Everyone and anyone can throw ideas at you, but ultimately the reasons why you build, renovate, extend or whatever should originate from the owner(s)/client...and ultimately the answers one way or the other will be primarily controlled/influenced by budget. Sorry if that's both vague and probing, but believe me this is key to and at the heart of any type of project :) PD...See MoreLooking for two-storey extension ideas
Comments (17)Without dimensions I have worked with OKL dimensions, thank you OKL, I have a problem with the current house with the kitchen living family on the southside without much out side space attached to it. This idea is to open up South through to North and opening up the house to that lovely Northern garden. A glass splash back window in the kitchen and a large sliding. stacker door opposite. The original bathroom Laundry can be reconfigured into a larger bathroom and Powder room...See Moreoklouise
