Timber or tiles?

Hubby and I are working though flooring options. We will have a large open plan kitchen dining living area leading outside in the new extension, which also includes a suspended section. To save $ suspended area will be footings and structural timber subfloor, rather than concrete. Builder is suggesting floor. Overnight to be timber flooring in the whole area, rather than porcelain tiles. Hubby is not keen on timber floors especially in kitchen/ wet areas. Can anyone provide me pro's and cons of timber vs tiles. Good bad and ugly. Thanks.

I love my timber thoughout. Have had it in a couple of houses. Easy underfoot, looks good, easy to clean, ageless.

Timber all the way. We are lucky enough to have parquetry through our entry, living, dining and kitchen areas. When we moved in my MIL suggested we pull it up and put tiles and we both said NO!

Tiles can be very cold (even if you get heating, it looks like a cold home). Also I feel it makes everything echo, especially if you have a large space.

Don't worry about timber in the kitchen or wet areas. Think about where wood comes from and what it goes through. It is so much more resilient than what you think.

I would love to see some images of the end result when you guys have finished the renovation.

Hi, why don't you have a think about installing composite decking which will allow you to be level with the door sill without the worry of run-off into the house due to the 5mm gap between the boards. Composite doesn't required coating so the maintenance issues are significantly less, just a hose down and sweep or mop with water. You would still need to excavate approx. 250mm below the finished deck level to allow for the sub-frame but if you use treated pine framing with, either H4 stumps in concrete, or galvanised stirrups to anchor the framing into the soil. Check with your local decking pro for further advice and brand options. Generally, the USA made composites like Trex or Timbertech are better quality and the concealed fixing systems are easy to install. Your soil type may be the only issue with water, ie clay which retains water, or sand which tends to drain more quickly. Good luck

You just can't beat timber. It's real and isn't trying to be something else. The timber look tiles do look quite ok but they could be unfashionable in 10 years time. Bit like tiles laid in the diamond pattern at the moment, just out of trend.... Tiling isn't cheap, mine charged just under $100 per sqm. It is pretty good though and was sandstone theres a bit work involved when compared to ceramic. Go with the real deal if you can afford it, will look great for decade's.

Ania, can you post photos when it is finished. It will be good to see those colours combined. I also love that inspiration photo and have it saved. I don't know what particular thing makes that bathroom stand out but it is beautiful. I want those exact same colours in my bathroom but a too scared to use timber tiles as I am scared they will date so am bringing in timber via accessories such as picture frames (I think). What is the grey tile in your photo and where is it from...it is very nice.

Hi Fi and Phil,

Have you looked into timber look tiles at all? They have all the technical advantages of porcelain tiles and look just like timber floorboards. This type of product does not need to be sealed, are very tough and durable and have no maintenance.

Timber for sure!! My parents had tiles in their kitchen and anything that was dropped shattered everywhere. Our timber floors in kitchen were done when it was built 15 years ago and still look beautiful.

I rather like the hard wearing tiles as have seen some timber very scratched from chairs, dog paws/claws etc.
