We would like the approximate cost of this vanity unit.

Our current unit is 2055 in length and 780 high. We would like the unit completely in timber and would add to free standing bowls on top. Obviously we would need to seal the vanity to protect it from water.

Hi Denise,

thank you for your inquiry on the Tathra vanity! We can create this piece to your dimensions with a solid timber top rather than the stone from beautiful recycled Messmate timber.

The timber is finished with Osmo, a high performance natural oil and wax finish that deeply penetrates into the timber rather than just sitting on top of the surface. This means that if a scratch does occur the timber is still protected. The other advantage over this finish is that it is renovatable. This means that if damage occurs, the surface is easily fixable by you in comparison to a polyurathane finish which would need to be completely removed and reapplied by a professional. This is the same finish we use on dining tables and kitchen benches which are exposed to way more wear and tear than in a bathroom!

At your measurements of 2055mm x 780mm and the configuration of 4 drawers and 2 cupboards, we can create this vanity for $3950. This price is inclusive of solid timber internal structures and drawer boxes.

Loving your space and flooring. We recently bought a white unit 2400 long. I had planned to have a cabinet built in at a later stage taking up the whole wall but have now decided that I like the option of having space at the ends for decorative pieces eg: the plant and accent chair. Also there is plenty of storage with the existing unit. I went for white to blend in with the walls to make the floor is more of a feature and I could then add colour accents in the room without it all being too much.

Can you butt a vanity unit right up against a wall?

Have seen many vanities butted up against walls on all 3 sides and 2 sides as well as the usual wall below a mirror. No idea of operation of drawer/etc. until one was seen in the flesh. Depends on hinges, etc., what its being installed near, etc. Basin top taps are probably easiest to install. They also generally use a stop cock to turn water on or off (for maintenance & the like) underneath the vanity with the basin top taps. More aesthetics than anything else really.

Just to confirm I have taken the great ideas presented here as advice only and have no intention to do some dodgy diy reno's. With the exception of a couple of quirky exposed timbers as you can see in my pictures there are no other exposed beams. As you can also see from the pictures there is a large roof space on the right (east) side of the house but the ceilings themselves are flat with a slight dip on the north wall. Based on my own personal experiences I would have to agree with Two's Company that there is a tendency towards rendered brick in WA (although there are still many exposed brick houses in my suburb) while double enclosed double garages are also highly desirable. I would also agree that toilets within the main bathroom and non traditional laundries may be considered unusual by many (but not all). Ensuites with toilets however are still very common. Also due to the nature of our work we would prefer the laundry separated from food/kitchen area. For a 4x2 house it is only around 155m2 excluding carport/alfresco which makes the rooms feel quite cramped, hence the desire to open up the family room. However, as Two's Company suggests we will need to first get a builder/eng in to check load bearing walls etc as this will undoubtedly affect what we can achieve within our budget. Having said that I still excited by many of your ideas and with luck hopefully can work some of them into the budget. Cheers all :)

En-suite layout is fine, Looks like you have a double hung window with a slightly lower sill to the vanity height. . I’d put a stool in front next to shower screen. Update vanity and top and splash back, maybe lowering mirror. Could put a niche in the side wall if want extra storage. Could change mirror to a cabinet, even if it protrudes, mine does, A smaller basin would increase spaciousness and bench space. Can also increase depth of vanity, to 550. Replace floor tiles if you want but I’d leave shower if you want to keep costs down. otherwise retile to full wall height will improve look. Could add a pendant light over left side of vanity

Hello Alison,

Have been checking on the different new timbers that you use. If we used Australian Chestnut would the price for our vanity be about the same as in Messemate? I assume the colour comes down to the stain that you select?

Yes there would be a reduction the price of the vanity to $3650 with the Australian Chestnut vs the Recycled Messmate with a solid timber top rather than the stone.
