Which plants for western afternoon sun

Hi Houzzers, I think I'm going to relocate my Agapanthus as they're getting scorched by our fierce Qld summer afternoon sun. Any suggestions for replacement? I'm after something that only grows knee high to fill the gap between our 2 x veggie beds and below the bamboo which is growing to block out our neighbours shed. It's not the prettiest area and it leads out to the clothes line and utilities area however something that fills the area behind the mondo would be nice. Thanks.

hi Shalyn,
society garlic would look fab mass planted instead of your agapanthus and it loves the sun and has a mass of pinky purple flowers, (see google images) lavender or rosemary would love your area also, if you want formal buxus or viburnum hedges are great but do need clipping to keep shape, love your area.

To compliment the bamboo, perhaps Rhaphiolepis - Oriental Pearl would work or for a different look, perhaps a Sansevieria variety (mother in laws tongue) variety.......
Or
Treat the area as another production garden zone.

Hi petapea, the phal orchids, I have killed more that two but now have one with three stems of buds and I am pretty happy with myself... I went to an orchid fair..advice was plant them in blue metal. Yes blue metal!!! I mixed some spagnum moss and charcoal through my blue metal. I water only when blue metal not looking dark. We have been going through a cool spring so about every two to four weeks. They sit in a north facing window and when I water I using strike back for orchids liquid fertiliser every third of fourth time just water to flush. Not sure how it would go in Brisbane but what about trying a conifer? They grow fast and very tall. You can shape them or leave them natural. They are plain and certainly not tropical. Maybe speak to a local nursery and find out if they would grow in the sub-tropical climate of Brisbane first, as they are usually in colder climates (Sydney and south). It really comes down to insulation, orientation, windows and cross-flow ventilation. Possibly your high-set house doesn't have the same ceiling insulation, or has more western windows, than your previous house. When considering your new home the orientation is the most important factor when considering how hot (or cold) it is. If you are in a hot climate then large sliding windows (not awning) and an open floorplan are also important if you want to get the benefits of cross-flow ventilation. With global warming our summers are only going to get more extreme so it is a good idea to consider how well a new house will perform with hot days when looking to buy.
