We installed this gas log fire in our B & B which has been very well received. We wanted to provide a warm and cosy environment for our winter guests. The wooden shelf above is beautiful wood, not sure what type and there are two cupboards either side, one for DVD's games and CD's and the other houses the technology. The flue is on the outside wall behind the fire place. It is very efficient and effective. It warms the whole apartment including a separate bedroom and kitchen. I would highly recommend this type of heater which is thermostatically controlled and so easy for our guests to use with a remote control.

Do you plan on using it for a heat source, or is it purely aesthetic? If it's a serious heat source, then I'd consider retrofitting an enclosed Jetmaster slow combustion or gas fire. Slow combustion fires are always preferable to open fires like you have- they slow the wood burn and direct the heat into the room, not up the chimney. Check out what the local wood supply and costs are first. If it's aesthetic, may gets run when you entertain. I'd get some black fireplace paint- paint the grate and the inner fire box black. I'd change the hearth- make it bigger, will prevent sparks and scorch marks. Like some others have suggested, keep the slate- change the mantel. Lots of DIY to give a go there!

if you don't need the heating for now you can always store the wood burner to be reinstalled in future (the wood burner you already own will always be cheaper and fit the space better than a new one) or lose the wood burner and install a gas log fire into the chimney

Hi Ginger , I'm in New Zealand , and the suggestions I would make if your house was here in NZ or Australia would be that there's nothing wrong with the house itself , I like the colour and style . What I would focus on is 'the rest' . The garden looks a bit new and a bit plain -- personally , I'd do a big colourful glazed pot , at least 60cm tall and wide ( 2 ft ) in your favoured blue or red or burgundy or green or similar , and have it 'in' the garden near the footpath ( you might need to move 1 plant ) . Maybe something unusual -- a bamboo or cactus or 3 or 4 small plants ? In the main garden , add some variety too -- a brown flax , a shrub with red leaves , 3 or 4 low yellow grasses ? The pergola over the door I like -- white rails and uprights , maybe a slightly sloping clear plastic roof -- it would tie in with the door , the windows and the look and era . The fences I would stain charcoal -- that would fade and weather well , and although 'black' ( charcoal ) , yellow and white is pretty cliche'd , it would work , and hopefully be different enough to make your place stand out from all the copying neighbours haha .
