You have a beautiful home. You are right though, this doesn't look right. I think the risk you run of adding things either side, is that it will look busy.

Have you got another spot in the house for it? A narrow piece of wall would be perfect, it elongates your room to draw the eye up to the gorgeous massive high ceilings. But I do suspect that this rug would do that anywhere you hang it.

Will it fit on the other side of the ceiling beam and the door to the right?

That would free up your wall for a wider piece- same width as the sofa.

yes... you're correct - doesn't look right - too thin for the space, what about painting a rectangle on that wall - to create a wider "space" for it. If you got the right paint colour, it would not only "frame it" but really enhance it

Hi Jo, the lack of gap between the chair and the rug may be another reason as to why it doesn't feel right too, the viewer doesn't get to complete the piece in the mind's eye? ... Does it go all the way to the floor? ... I like the idea of it being hung horizontally too...

I agree with Tracey, it needs to be offset from the sofa. The perfect spot, so that you see the whole piece is between the doorway and the first beam. The bottom of the rug should finish about ten centimetres from the top of the skirting board. It will look a lot more interesting than hung horizontally above the sofa which would be very predictable. To tie it in with everything else, choose the darker rust colour in the rug and decorate the sofa with a throw or cushion with that colour in it. Also hanging a couple of interesting small prints to the left side of the sofa, will help the sofa look less diminutive in the space. Good luck!
