New Home: Slate floor tiles throughout entire home??
Hi All,
Really struggling here and in need of some advice. My husband and I hate carpet and are putting in 350sqm of tiles throughout our new home although we can't decide on a tile. The major thing is we love that natural stone look accompanied by white hamptons style finishes and a lot of timber, we have been set on one tile (slaty) for so long although have always been a bit concerned that the tile will be way too busy for all the bedrooms as well and something you would get sick of over time. So we found an alternative but I just don't completely know if it will suit our design and makes the house feel too cold and 'modern', the tiles are a R9 or 10 so pretty rough although are porcelain so don't need maintenance.
The two tiles are included in the photo top is ardesia black andbottom is slaty multicolour. There are many photos on Houzz of the slaty tile although not many if any of the other.
So essentially I would like some advice on whether this tile will be suitable for a house with a the style we are going for or will it take away from all of the other beautiful things in the house and create a sense of urgency rather than calm...

Comments (12)The floor tile is basically a flat colour there's no vein or pattern at all. It's the bench that has the pattern. We already have a skylight and the only other area we can put a window has an a/c unit unfortunately. The other walls have rooms on either side. It's tough. I found another tile yesterday I love. But from about 11 until 3pm, the entire island bench has this yellow hue to it. I think because no direct sunlight is hitting it?? But mornings and evenings it looks lovely! I might just have to bite the bullet and go with how nice it looks for the majority of the time (mornings and evenings). Comments (48)HU - I really think you should start a new thread on this issue as, many people may not see this when it is an old thread. I've had different colours of the exact same carpet in a house, but there were rooms in between so it was never obvious, but two different carpets together is another thing again. How did you feel the green looked with the off white?? If you were happy with the two colours together, then you could put any colour you liked with it, otherwise maybe remove the carpet from the stairs, although that can then make the stairs very noisy. What is the condition of the off white carpet - do you feel it may need replacing soon so you could match whatever you do now, if it is a carpet that does not look like being discontinued in the near future. You may even be able to match the off white that is there. Another hassle with using two different carpets is the weave and texture can make them look more odd together than different colours. It is really hard to advise you on this, you really need to see the two carpets together, at least it is easy to bring home carpet samples to see just what you can live with. Comments (71)Sorry to say but I'd suggest it's worse in some aspects. The doglegged entry flow (still) from front/street is not ideal and entry position blocks prime light into the sitting. Generally the planning still could be more streamlined. It's not ideal having the main access flow from the stair through the upper level living space. A more centralised stair would be far better, for both levels, now it involves moving into the secondary formal sitting space to access upstairs. I'm actually working on a project at the moment where the previous architect did exactly this rendering the front sitting space pretty much useless (slap forehead), and so now the new owner clients are faced with having to unpick/pull it apart to get the stair properly configured and positioned so the associated spaces flow and function properly. Imagine here wanting to move from the pool to your master bedroom - you'd have to move through essentially the whole house - it's not efficient movement configuration. You have in some areas of the design arguably oversized and undersized areas/spaces for the function, which means the balance is not right in the planning. For example there's an abundance of voids upstairs and massive swing room in the master bedroom, but then downstairs the laundry is tiny and there's unusable flow space between the dining and the living space. You still have issues with overlooking from the alfresco, which would mean screening on the north. Site restrictions are not an excuse for obviously compromised planning, rather they need to be negotiated cleverly so they're not obvious or noticeable and the design is not forced....See More

7 years agoHi Not sure why you have chosen slate, Hamptons generally have dark timber floors with rugs, have you considered polishing the concrete and finishing with a dark colour, at the other end what about sandstone flooring this first photo is a friends house which has this and continues outside.
