Dilemma with the stairs... timber halfway up then carpet?
Comments (9)If there is a storage cupboard underneath the stairs, then I think its best to let go of the open risers. At the end of the day when it comes to stairs, I think you need to make simple decisions, don't complicate it. Sometimes spaces fuss over stairs and they can look great, but they are very impractical, expensive and dangerous. I think if you live in a house with no kids and no elderly, then you can lash out and go for something with more design risk. I think the timber stair profile shown in your picture looks great, and would work well with your vertical timber beam balustrade. However timber stairs can be noisy and quite slippery. If you are using carpet upstairs then you could consider running carpet all the way down the stairs. Don't do the half half thing. In order to finish the edge of the stairs neatly, I would edge the stairs with the plaster finish continuing from the cupboard wall, all the way up to the edge of the stairs and making an edge profile for the carpet to be neatly tucked into. By doing this you could still get the stepping silhouette which would look very cool. Then the beams could run off the plaster surface and not the edge of the carpet. Ultimately carpet may be annoying to have to vacuum, but it is a lot quieter, considerably cheaper and safer than timber stairs. Hope that helps. Good luck with it....See MoreStuck for ideas in weird layout bathroom
Comments (18)Thanks so much to everyone, I really appreciate your help. It is finally done. It looks great and we had a few little hiccups. It took about 4 weeks longer than they said; Vanity Caesarstone top was nothing like the sample so that was replaced; Stegbar sliding shower screen glass door didn't have holes drilled so that was delayed a week and mix up in communication added another 2 days; when carpenter removed tiles etc as prep, a lot of junk went down the drain so it overflowed (lesson there for him to cover drains). The tiler I insisted on using did a great job but hard to get the communication going between the facilitator, the water proofer and the tiler. I got the lights from Temple and Webster (12 volt), I just need to get a different lamp to match the others (2 are bright white and 1 is warm). I am very happy with the finished product - see attached panorama shot (I just need to put up the white wooden blinds). Thanks again....See MoreI’m stuck with this ugly facade??
Comments (11)If you don’t like the fence then remove it. It doesn’t really fit in with the era of the house. Returning a window to that blank wall would improve the look of the house. It currently looks odd and unfriendly. Windows improve your street presence. Choose windows in keeping with the rest of the house. Also think about orientation. If the front is facing west you’ll get harsh western light in summer heating up that room unless you have vertical shading. It might be why they bricked it up in the first place. Which brings me to the awning to the right of the house. It is what makes that window look odd. It would greatly improve the look of the house if it was removed, but if your house faces west you might regret it. Really think hard before rendering. Bricks are virtually maintenance free. Render will require ongoing maintenance. And there is the potential to look like you’re trying to turn the house into something it’s not rather than embracing it. As trends go, brick is back and render is on the way out. Not that you should always follow trends. Your money might be better spent on landscaping and other things that will improve the amenity. Congratulations on the new house. It’s very exciting....See MoreStuck with ideas how to furnish a lounge room
Comments (16)Hi there! Just jumping in to offer a bit of advice about the dining room rug: As the chairs will be constantly moving around on top of the rug, you might find that a jute or a synthetic rug would wear very quickly. Your best bet is to choose a material that wears well and is easy to clean such as wool. Opt for a short pile height for under dining tables - they're not only easier to clean, but its easier to push your chair back over a thinner rug than a thicker one! In terms of size, guests should be able to push their chairs back from the table without going over the edge of the rug, so to get the best size, measure your table, then add approx 60 cm. It looks like you might have limited space around your dining table - if you're looking to place a rug, maybe see if you can place the table a bit further out from the wall. For colour choice, opt for a darker colour if it works in the space, as its much more practical when it comes to spills and stains! Hope we've helped :)...See MoreBAYRI & KIKI INTERIORS
