I need help with choosing a rug for my lounge area.
I am in the process of finalising the furnishing of my new home. The living room has a very clean, uncluttered and modern feel. The lounge area needs a rug and I am struggling with this purchase. Should I continue with the clean lines by keeping the rug understated, or does my room need some drama? I don't want to compete with the view, because the view is what this room is all about. The tones are greys, blues, silvers, taupe/grey tile flooring with white walls. I do like the Bayliss Plaza rug in Metal Grey, it has the vertical lines that compliment the clean lines of the home. Is it too safe? The lounge colour is better reflected in the second photo, it is more grey/muted blue. When the curtains are closed they are a sheer silver linen look.

Comments (3)I would suggest playing around with your zones, move them without hesitation then sit in each space and rule them out or in as you go. Fresh eyes and all that. I would move your dining to your current lounge, the lounge int that alcove where your study is, you window is higher in here and will accommodate that smart fabric sofa with the tv cabinet on the opposite wall, the armchair will fill the corner really well with a smart floor lamp to accentuate the window and views by night, it will easily become a cool place to retreat. Lounges are also nicer when they have some sense of detachment from the busy work zones ie kitchens and hallways. Your study can be modernized and positioned where your current dining table is, because it's small, and would be an afterthought as you walk right past it from the corridor entering this space. Think stunning bookshelves. Some retro looks have floor to ceiling open backed shelves that could create a hall divider when coming in, so the kitchen is a little more separated, but also, the wall could have some smart practical joinery built here. I would put a desk along the short wall with a designer chair, maybe an upholstered one, a featherston or eames. This creative space could really sharpen the overall look in here, there are some amazing looking workspaces to be inspired by, and the new lounge would feel a real getaway tucked into your corner. Comments (12)It's easier to comment on suitable chair fabric after seeing the exact style of the other furniture items you decide to buy Ange, as there are so many styles of 'industrial' to choose from. If you like the fabric on your sofa cushions, you could always try to find some old chair/s at auction or Op-shop and have them re-covered in a similar material. 6 years agoSammy I was going to include the following rug because of the modern lounge colour very 70's funky, it can be shag carpet or Flokati ( Flokati can be washed out door in a kids pool we did it this way)

6 years agoNothing can compete with your view but oriental rug can add warmth , colour and interest to a room . I love mixing modern with antique rugs.

carpet to match the tiled floor colour so that it blends but gives warmth and ties the space together as per previous post prior to the fun shaggy one.

6 years agoI understand exactly where you are coming from siriuskey, I much prefer the understated look and then I can add colour with cushions, throws, etc. I should mention that the colour of the rug is much more understated than how it appears online and in celerygirls photo. It is a very subtle silver / grey almost perfectly matching the curtains that also appear darker in my photo. I also have a rather large piece of art that may clash a little with the bolder patterned rugs.

OK peeps here are a couple of pics of the new rug. Can you believe I went with my original choice. It's difficult to represent this room and the rug in pics, colours rarely look true and room always look elongated. This rug is 3 metres long and 2.5 mtrs wide but it doesn't look it. Very happy with my choice and thanks again for your help.
