Yes- great advice above! This is not the tilers fault- they've probably set the fall to that 1 drain, which means it will run out the door too. The lack of x 2 drains, the big profile tiles, the too small shower frame and the big shower heads- send water bouncing everywhere. The best outcome will be retro-fitting a custom door as Cipriano suggested. I don't think trying a smaller shower head will fix this.

Big over sight with only one small drain a custom door as suggested would help along with a good squeegy mop, good luck

I think you need to have another discussion with your tiler. A professional tiler would know that the floor waste in this space is far from adequate. I think a long strip drain along the wall side of the shower area would have worked well with the correct fall. I would suggest speaking with your tiler about the issue and seeing if you can work out a compromise. Good luck!

agree Fernbrooke Homes a long strip drain would really help with floor water but the shower screens are too short to stop splashing. I do think the Plumber would have had some input as well and could have at least avoided the bad drainage situation

Retro fitting a long shower drain is an obvious answer but could be costly if the waterproof membrane is damaged while removing the tiles. If so lift all tiles to entire shower only, re waterproof and set new waste as low as possible to maximize the fall. Then retile the shower so any change in grout colour occurs under the shower screens and entry. That way it is less obvious that you have had work done. Open showers are great but the shower heads will provide heaps of water and splash so a simple "D" strip of polished metal which is often used won't help. Remember that N.B.C. regulations for the shower entry require min 600mm clear.

Apart from that look fabulous and get used to a bit of splash.

Is it possible to see a photo of how you solved the problem?

My son has the same problem in both the main bathroom and his ensuite bathroom, The tiler has redone the tiles but the problem is still there. Not sure what to try next. Will be interested in follow up comments.

It's not the tilers fault. He could only work within the confines and correct fall. It should have had a full length shower grate on back wall. The fault is in the contractor who didn't take the time to fit one. I have just completed my upstairs ensuite and had the plumbing set up for it easily by planing the ceiling joists to a fall and then fitting another floor. Too hard basket me thinks.

Hi Grace, so sorry to hear of your upsetting problem, here are a couple of examples of what drain should have been installed in your design along the back wall of your shower.

A strip drain on the back wall won't work because you need to connect to the existing floor waste drain which is in the centre of the shower space. Therefore one strip drain centrally located to run the full length of the shower is the only way to retro fit the floor waste. Try using a drain with tile inserts to minimize the visual disruption. I've used metal strips on my own shower and they work well provided the water is minimal. I have my fingers crossed that your solution works but I'm not holding my breath. Good Luck.

Great advice above, the strip drain opposite the entry point was the proper way to do it. However, the strip in front of the door is likely to be a temporary fix. You see, most grout is not waterproof it is water resistant, so water will penetrate, however, if the floor slopes are correct, it all works without a problem.If water, however, doesn't drain from the floor quickly enough it will soak through grout and sit between the tiles and waterproof membrane. You may think, so what, it still will not leak! In most cases, this is true if the waterproofing is perfect. There are however types of mold that grow in the complete absence of light as they grow they will eventually dislodge the tiles ( the process normally takes 3 to 7 years). just the same as tree roots lift and crack concrete. We know this as we have been bathroom renovation specialists for more than 2 decades, and see this on a regular basis. If not rectified, the problem will be back.

I think if you silicon (clear) the base of the glass screens, the seepage of water will be limited to the opening. also another small glass screen directly in front of the opening could also limit the amount of splash you have to deal with.

Yes its a Fail and with so many things wrong with the design elements of this bathroom I don't think there is an easy answer. I couldn't help noticing even the wall niche is not centered between the shower controls or the tiles. Unless you are prepared to redo the entire floor area and install a long central drain which really is essential in a double shower I think you may have wasted a lot of time and money by installing two shower heads as you will spend all your time using the one closest to the drain to avoid flooding. I think Debluc's suggestion of retro fitting a door could help but unfortunately will only stop splashing but not floor seepage. To match your black fittings I would go for a black framed sliding barn door rolling on a black track. One thing you need to do immediately is to get the ceiling sealed and painted before mold sets in and as others have said I also feel very sorry for you and suggest you go back to the designer and plumber as these are really there mistakes.

I haven't read all the comments but if you want a cheap alternative without doing any modifications to the look of the shower you could try using a dolly to divert and retain the water in the shower cubicle.

I'm constantly surprised that architects, designers and plumbers often overlook the most obvious things which can be so infuriating (like this drain!) -plus every time you have a shower here the water's going to splash out on to the floor (so every morning you have to wipe the floor outside). Other things like often no niche installed for shampoos etc, and wall hung basins with no space left to put spare toilet rolls and cleaners.

A half round water stop siliconed between the glass panels will look good and minimise water venturing beyond the shower recess or something as simple as a bath mat in front of the opening when showering.

We retrofitted a dome shaped 3mm high, 1cm wide aluminum strip on top of the tiles across our walk in shower entry which completely solved an identical issue. It Cost $20 from a shower screen installer

The main problem here was putting 2 shower heads in a space that was not big enough for them. "Shower with a friend" seems like a cool idea, but how often does it happen in reality? Most people end up regretting this design. The best solution here would be to get rid of the right hand shower head, replace the existing shower screens with one longer panel on the left, and the opening at the right wall end.

CP, from the photo it looks like the shower area is 2200 x 900. That would make the glass panels about 750 or 800, not really enough for this type of shower.

I thought of a double shower originally in our new build but hubby has the water way to hot for me to stand and I have it too cold for him so definitely wouldn't work, so still have the large area 1500 x 1200 but one shower at one end and no door at the other end

The actual shower base that we bought was a ready made base with the water flow etc... already complete, so it was just set into the floor and will have a channel drain at the short 1200mm end and the base is actually 1800mm long but we deicided on a slightly shorter screen 1500mm to allow for wheelchair access between the spa and shower screen.

I have no idea how far the water might splash in our shower when it's complete but with the opening at the other end of the shower, so I can't imagine we'll have an issue.

The shower is also going on the long wall and it will face the screen and not the opening so that should also help.

I've attached a photo of the shower base when it was first fitted into the bathroom and you can probably see we have removed 300mm of the shower edge to give us more room beside the spa that's just to the left of the pic and up on the wall are the hot and cold pipes and to the right the shower pipe. Second pic is just recent after I coated the entire bathroom with waterproof membrane.

Glad I saw this and all the information. This will help me with things to look out for when I hire a builder for my new house on my lot in Panama city beach, FL. Hopefully I can find a reputable builder with good designs at reasonable price. But with the housing boom here I am having trouble even getting a builder out here to give me price.

MB Design & Drafting, I have to contradict your comment about having only 1 floor waste, we have a large double shower with only 1 floor waste, ours is in the centre of our double shower, our tiles are black and by the time we get out of the shower the water on our shower floor is gone, I always clean the tiles and glass before leaving the shower, I leave the fan on while we dry and by the time we are dried our shower floor is almost dry, we have no trouble at all with only 1 floor waste..

Barbara, we have the same problem, which is not a problem at all, my husband likes his shower much hotter than me but we have our showers turned on to suit each other, we have a small seat at each end to sit on while we wash our hair and feet and each others backs.

I think it's all about the job being done right as far as the drainage goes and obviously yours was done right!!

Unfortunately sometimes that isn't how peoples bathrooms finish up and it's terribly awkward and inconvenient to fix the problem most times and expensive to start again if there isn't sufficient tiles for example to replace the ones that might have to get torn up to repair water fall, not to mention if there is only one bathroom in the home, consequently, so often people have to live with the mistake for a time or forever!!

Are you annoyed about water in the centre between the two shower roses. Because there would be noway to prevent that.

On the other hand if you are upset about water coming outside the shower area the only way to deal with that dilemma would be to redo the shower screen to one that includes a door.

Considering Australian standards states that if a shower is unenclosed the floor needs to fall within a distance of 1500mm this means water can disperse through any openings within 1500mm of the shower rose. The only way to prevent water on the outside of the shower is to add a door.
