West facing garden

The small garden under our bedroom window at the front of the house is in desperate need of renovation. It faces West and is currently filled with a mishmash of hydrangea, azalea and gardenia. I want to get rid of all of these as they are just not thriving. I was thinking of standard roses but it may be too hot there. Alternatively something which could be hedged, perhaps. It does get very hot in the afternoon in summer. What cannot be seen from the photo is a hedged Murraya at the end of the Veranda, and on the right hand side at the street near the fence is a very large may bush which is hedged into a round shape. On the driveway side for the entire length of the driveway, about 40 m, we have gardenias. I'd be grateful for suggestions.
