Exterior colour choice for extension
We are planning to extend our house out the back. As we like the style of the current house we wanted to match up with that. However, the roof will need to be replaced as you can't get that colour anymore, it is a pink colorbond tin roof. We are thinking that the windows and gutters may need an updated colour. They are currently a dark red possibly manor red, but faded. The brick is a pale pink tint but we thought to keep that as it may not look so pink once the roof colour has been changed. For the roof we are tossing up on a dark grey colour such as ironstone, basalt or wallaby as this should be a nice contrast to the pale brick. On the new part of the house we would rather not put dark red windows, we would rather something more like the roof colour but dont really want to replace what weve got. Would it look funny to change window colour at the back of the house or should we stick to the dark red colour? Any ideas or suggestions. Attached is a photo of the house as it is now...

Comments (4)We used dune for our fascia, Windows and verandah posts with woodland grey gutter and roof. I have to say I have been a little disappointed with it as once it got a bit dusty it didn't seem to have enough contrast anymore. Comments (5)Fiona, you have a very traditional looking home, with some nice rustic looking brickwork. A rendered box added to the first floor is going to look like it was plonked in with it's contemporary smooth finish contrasting with the traditional, ground floor. Had you considered some other forms of lightweight cladding such as James Hardie's Linea weatherboards, which are much more low-maintenance than traditional weatherboards and work well for first floor extensions to traditional homes? Comments (2)Often with narrow frontages and narrow blocks it is actually quite hard to see the roof at the rear. If this is the case then I would select Surfmist as its great at reflecting heat, and the darker colours absorb more heat. There is no rule that says that your gutters and fascias which will probably be more visible need to match the roof colour, and I would anticipate that you would be renewing all of these at the same time.
