Help me choose a new rug

I'm looking at buying a new rug but am afraid it might be too big for such a cozy room. The rug measures 244 x 305cm and is outlined in blue tape in the photos. I am interested in people's thoughts. It will be only 5cm from the fireplace hearth and not centred in the room. TIA

Hi Caitlin

If the mission is to cover the floor then I don't see a problem. I think it will bring some colour into the space and warm up the room. Can I ask if it is 100% wool, then no issue with the hearth if there are synthetic materials in the rug they are highly flammable and may pose a risk near your heating but as long as there is no open flame you should be fine. Well Done, beautiful choice.

I believe it's 100% wool and until I (eventually) replace the wood stove, I won't be starting any fires!

I would like to see some of the floor however as it's the only room for my son the play in, the floor is very quickly getting damaged.

I have most of the floor exposed in the dining room, next to the living room, and have used a cowhide so I suppose it will be ok to cover most of the floor, just don't want it to look silly.

My other option is to buy the next size down, however that is slightly smaller than the existing rug - which I think is too small.

Trying to do up a living space that as gey tiles, mint green walls and a touch of purple from the kitchen benches. The couch is a cotemporary rusty red couch. Im trying to get a warm, contemporary studio look. Its not an area that is used a lot as doesnt have a lot of light. Trying to decide on a rug. Dont like too many patterns on a rug as I dont want to change it too frequently. Any ideas?:)

I don't profess to be an expert in anything useful. I've two rugs on floor boards and one needs some non slip (avail from Bunnings) and one doesn't. It's quite cheap. I've also seen Martha Stewart add rows of silicon to the bottom of rugs to make them non slip but to me that ruins the rugs.

I bit the bullet and paid to get my slate removed and taken away from open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area before getting the new kitchen installed - best thing I ever did although the process was painful - should have paid the extra to get the concrete slab levelled at the same time - anyway I then paid the floating floor company extra money to hire a concrete sander to level the floor before the bamboo boards went down. In the end it all worked out once I managed to clean up the concrete dust - very happy with the bamboo flooring so much better than the old slate. If I was to do it again - I would pay a professional to get the slate up and floor levelled instead of just using the kitchen companies guy to remove the tiles - hopefully they would have a better method of dealing with concrete dust.

Then you've made the right choice. The rug is a perfect size too as a rule of thumb with furniture and rugs is that at least two legs of each chair in the room should sit on the rug. Noticed all of your chairs will now have at least two legs on the new rug. You will also get glimpses of your beautiful floors around the room. Enjoy!

Is there one with less pattern I was once in love with same rug until I brought it home and it was to much , to busy I had to replace it with something simpler.

As per Sally e comment, the current table is quite dominating in the space, a glass topped coffee table would allow the focus to be on the rug :)

You have such lovely floor boards - I have recently purchased rugs to go over my floor carpet that is coming up to needing replacement. I looked at many options. Have you considered a square rug? If the floor boards are cold and you are using the rug for heat then go with the bigger the better.

I love the design of the rug & the size! You have neutral coloured furniture and walls so a bright multiple coloured rug works.
With the size of it you can opt to have the seating furniture on it rather than against the walls and create a cozy feeling.

Rug looks good. Don't get rid of your coffee table. Just slightly sand the top and pick an antique white or light grey paint with primer already in it and give it 2 coats. It will come up great. wouldn't take long to do. Add a tray with candles and small artificial plant, *& would look great. Good luck.

Just had a second look. If you lime washed the bricks on the fireplace in a light grey, it would totally softer and warmer. The bricks a bit to harsh.
