Have you thought of mirrored glass. We rented a $2 million dollar penthouse and it had a dark grey smoked mirrored glass splash back on both sides of a galley kitchen. It was amazing. So easy to clean as no grout and optically it doubles the size of the room. I could also watch the TV and what the kids were getting up to in the reflection of the mirrors. It works both with modern and traditional applications and cost about the same as a coloured glass splash back. You could just go to a standard hight of an overhead cupboard then put some simple shelving (IKEA) up above it to display a few items on this would save you money on the glass and add some visual interest at eye level. I would also do a black chalk board wall behind the door near the fridge. You can get magnetic paint (Masters) If you do two coats of this first and then the black board paint (found Dulux to be the best) over the top it becomes a magnetic blackboard. sarahburf - I was going to go for a glass splashback for my new kitchen but decided it was just going to be too plain so I chose a glass mosaic tile and am so glad I did now. The one I chose was white with hints of soft colour in it but it reflects any other colours in the kitchen too. What I like most is that it just adds some bling to take the plainness away. Hi Adriana, You can have whatever you want and works with your style. If you go with tiles then invest the extra money in epoxy grout that will make cleaning a great deal easier - regardless of what colour/style you go for. Dark grout with white tiles is quite modern and makes cleaning grout a little easier - personally, I don't favour it but that's just personal taste. I would check the ease of cleaning on any matt tile. To bring in warmth to your kitchen (as black and white can be a bit stark sometimes) look at bringing some colour in - even metallics in silver, bronze or copper or even opalescent tiles can be gorgeous and can also help bounce light in a subtle way back into your room while giving you a luxury look with depth and interest. Go to your tile supplier and ask for samples so that you can take them home and put them in the space and get a sense of how they'll work - sometimes the way they look away from the tile shop is completely different to how they look in the shop. It all depends on your other choices. What colour/type of cabinets, benchtops, flooring, lights other furnishings in adjoining rooms etc. Can you give us more detail?
