How to combine traditional furniture with modern furniture?

Our dining setting and wall unit are traditional Baltic wood. We are moving to a new contemporary seaside home and I need to buy 2 new modern chairs for the room. Looking at swivel tubs but not sure? Any advice on colour, style, shape is welcome.

Hi! Where are the chairs going and do you want Sleek Modern?
large room is entry, dining with room for chairs by the picture windows. Sleek modern could work but husband insists they must be comfy- not just to look at :)

Can I mix modern with traditional

Both! Most current interiors are referencing our past anyway. So this contemporary feature wall will be a highlight, maybe then place a hall stand or mirror on this wall that has traditional characteristics, OR uses traditional materials. Mixing form and finishes goes along way to making this collaboration of styles work. For example,if you want a modern dining table, use traditional materials, and like a traditional sofa, upholster in a modern print. Etc. Incorporating a little of both in key pieces will make a statement, so consider the largest or most key item in each room, i.e. the sofa in a lounge, and really contemplate how it will work with the main style. If your cabinetry is traditional, then I'd use this as a style foundation, so key pieces perhaps more traditional in colour or shape, then accent in more contemporary artwork, lighting and rugs etc. Because otherwise your kitchen will look outdated in comparison.

If you love it you should keep it. Off white or similar plain fabric sounds great. I would use the chairs as accent pieces in separate rooms and pair the couch with modern/mid century chairs that have clean lines and legs to give a sense of space underneath them. These could be a different accent colour or work back with the same tones as the couch depending on other pieces. You could stain the legs of these to work with the wood tones on your couch. Good luck would love to see the finished room.

Uba tuba isn't a pure black. The slabs I've looked at are a very deep black/green with veins of gold and bits of pale grey....a very busy, interesting stone. That's why I've opted for pale cabinetry and a pretty plain floor tile. I want to floor to be as unobtrusive as possible, but with still a bit of a mottled/pattern so that every bread crumb doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. The floor tile I'm looking at is a Metropol Track as is very industrial looking.

I love the combination of modern with traditional furniture, your dining chairs could be really cool with your dining table, but you'll have to remove the table cloth. Really!!!!

I love the chairs that Genevieve found you.

Or what about an Egg chair, a real design classic, but modern:

If you are moving to a contemporary home, but need to use current traditional furniture, there are ways you can use a transitional chair that will give the dining room a more modern look, maybe not sleek modern, but a modern seaside feel, with the baltic wood.

I think the chairs you have now are not the best. They color is too anemic next to the wood, and they are not substantial enough to blend with the heavier table.

Maybe upholstered sleek chairs with a high back for comfort, in a modern pattern, and strong enough color to stand up to the heavy table and cabinet, with legs the same color wood as the table.
The table cloth is not the right feeling for a sleek look. Some very nice placemats would work well in a beach house.

Any displays in the cabinet must be just a few, large, pieces. Little chochkees will not work. Also a fabulous modern bowl, etc (LARGE) on the table would be great.

The chairs you have now, would look really sleek and stylish on your deck with a great table.

Be careful of picking out items that are too spindly and stark if you are going to try to blend your current furniture.

The cream modernized wing-back chair above would be perfect pieces to use instead of the small swivel chair.. It is sleek but softened with the rounded arms, and the wood trim, that would blend perfectly but look very modern.

Thanks everyone. Helpful ideas. (The table cloth is not going into the new house, just happens to be the only photo of the table I have :)
I agree with Genevieve and love her chair, would be nice to add some color though.
Yes I like the chair Genevieve has shown...now I need to find someone in Australia who sells it - or something similar.

Oh, happy hunting Seuss - I never set my heart on anything I see on this website!!!

Ikea do a nice chair with a footstool and it is in the beech wood too. At least we can get Ikea here, even if we do pay through the nose for it. I will see if I can find it.

The wing chair isn't quite as sleek and modern as Genevieve's.
I wish that a budget would be given ,it would make a search easier . I have always said that its easier spending someone else money than our own:))
LOL Genevieve and more fun too. Furniture here isn't that easy to find and definitely not cheap so I always go for cheaper options.
I usually stay with in the in between :))
Look at the Zuo modern berry chair. It comes in white and has a tufted back which speaks to the traditional wood pieces. It has a very good price point.
The combined creative input here has helped me work out the direction I need to take. Very much appreciated.
Glad to be of help Seuss. Don't forget we love to see photos of the finished result. Hope all goes smoothly for you.
Found this at Matt Blatt Australia, very similar lines to the one Genevieve posted. I really like it, picks up the wood - sleek and modern in shape. Not being able to test it out for comfort before buying online is tricky though.
It is a nice chair, I like the arm rests. Are there reviews available from customers who've previously bought this chair?
No customer reviews. Description says "A stunning design reminiscent of mid century Denmark, the Flynton Armchair is style and comfort combined. Featuring a solid oak frame, walnut armrests and beige upholstery, the chair is simplicity and versatility combined beautifully,"
Sounds almost like a description of someone who's trying to sell it ;-) It looks comfortable enough, but I wouldn't dare buy a chair just from a photo online. Hmm... dilemma, dilemma...
I'll take time to think about it. I'll ring the store and find out what options they can offer. Certainly a dilemma...online shopping shows you the world- but not being able to find the item in a location near you is frustrating!
Since I'm in the Netherlands, about everything is near us :-D But I do understand how frustrating it must be.

No bragging thank you Carolins - we are so deprived here, it is not funny, especially when cruising this web site. Anything half way decent usually has a ridiculous price tag and we don't enjoy the generous return policies the US has. Still a great place to live. Hope all is well with you.

Seuss, I have never heard of Matt Blatt, not that I am familiar with many brands. I wonder what their reputation is like? Sometimes the type of stores they deal with can give a clue - a store with a good reputation would not sell just anything. It is a really nice chair.
Oh, poor olldroo :-) Sorry, I mean: Oh, poor olldroo :-( I really feel for you.
All is well in the Northern half of this world. At least where I am it is. Only it's about half as warm as it should be this time of year. Could do with a bit of sunshine.
Can't offer you any sorry, we are being deluged at the moment, but we do need it. Don't mind the fact it is cold now, I'd had enough of summer. The US mob are complaining about the weird weather too.

Things might be looking up a bit - a Pottery Barn just opened here, too far from me, but they are online. Take care.
We just had a hailstorm. Sigh.
Hooray for Pottery Barn. Not very (mid century) modern, so it doesn't help our friend Seuss here, but very stylish in a different way.

Whoa, some nice chairs there but not cheap. Saw one that would match Seuss' dining chairs @ $6,380 for ONE chair!!! I don't think so - how can that price be justified!

I know Pottery Barn wouldn't help Seuss, it is just the fact that finally these places are coming here. I'm trying to justify $74 for a cushion cover though. Would you believe we had some hail today too!!
@olldroo, do you mean the connectfurniture link I found or the DWR one? Because I found a link that has very reasonable prices I thought. Okay, almost all of the furniture are copies, but for most of us the real deal is a bit on the expensive side.
The $ 6,380 for one Jacobsen dining chair is unbelievable. I have two of the real deals in my home and I'm pretty sure they weren't thát expensive.
Carolins link is a good one, I have visited the site before. The Matt Blatt chair I posted is $895 AU, which I think is a good price for replica look. I am not wanting the real deal. Certainly such furniture is beautiful (and a work of art) however when I weigh up priorities I cannot afford to spend that much.

And when your child comes in from playing and sits on the $6000 chair and he's got an almost-melted chocolate bar in his cargo shorts (he's already been twitching all over the chair) and smeared hands slippery from trying to dig it out but already the chocolate's come through the shorts onto the chair, well, you do get the picture...@carolins. That's a neat website. Wish there was one for the US. Speaking of the your homeland, the Netherlands, my best friend relocated from there with his new bride twenty years ago. Every one in a while he misses the terrible weather. You know, cold, rainy, cloudy, foggy, and if and when we happen to get a day something like that (we're in N.E. Florida) he misses home! BTW he's one of the best physical therapists I've ever met and I used to go through them like toilet paper!. He got rid of a terribly bad spasm that I had in one form or another for three decades, and he did it in three sessions. It changed my life.
Madeline - do you mean people who can afford a $6,000 chair can actually afford kids??? Or vice versa.

Seriously, paying big bucks for the odd special piece of furniture is fine but generally speaking to purchase middle of the road furniture of reasonable quality, looks and practicality is fine. My last lounge was a nice middle of the road one, stood up to wear very well for 25 years, survived three teenagers and their friends, young grandchildren with chocolate covered hands, and still had plenty of life when I had to toss it - no one else wanted it, not even a charity. I had to get rid of it because although it was of average height, it was just too low for my old bones. My hips ached when I sat in it for and hour or more and getting out of it was too much on my knees. Needs do change as one gets older, children leave the nest, people downsize - forever furniture is really a thing of the past.
@Madeline; I'm glad your friend was able to help you. Say hi to him from me please. I'm sure he won't miss the current weather. Yesterday was the coldest may 23, since they started keeping track. Today is a bit better in our part of the country though, nice and sunny. I live in the province Groningen, in a tiny village close to the town Groningen (where there's an Ikea, but there's also Maupertuus: http://www.vosinterieur.nl/collectie.aspx and everything in between).

Hello Seuss, I have read the posts and it is unclear from your original question how you would like to use these two new chairs. I see that you have been shown some beautiful chairs. I suspect that they are for the lounge and not to use for the head of the table and thus will not be very comfortable to use at the head of the table even with a firm cushion and lumbar pillow. You are really going to need to looking in stores for upholstered chairs that are specifically made for use at a dining table. If they are for a seating area in the same room then yes the chairs will work that have been suggested, price aside. Good Luck.

Thanks for your advice. The chairs are not dining chairs, they are for relaxing - looking at the view, reading, chatting etc. This room is not the main living or lounge area, it's an entry, with formal dining table and room for a couple of comfortable sitting chairs.
