I would pull in that lovely grey on the outside of the island. Are you thinking simple tile or would you consider something a little more intricate?

I agree - I would suggest a charcoal the same as your island front - either tiles or glass. It's a stunning colour as a backdrop to brass accessories like your stunning pendants.

Looks like you have lots of lovely natural light. Therefore going darker (the charcoal seems to be getting everyone's vote) won't make the space too foreboding. And it will tie in with the front of your island bench.
All-white might be a bit too stark, but you could always add display pieces that introduce colour.
Or be bold and take up Siriuskey's suggestion! I thought that was very clever.

If you were concerned about the copper look splash back being difficult to clean you could place clear glass over it, it would look amazing cheers

I have very similar colours in my [almost 10 year old] kitchen and went with charcoal glass splash back with a sparkle, it still looks awesome. Whilst the copper to match the pendants would be stunning I personally think it will date very quickly so would stick with the grey/charcoal of your island and add touches of the copper with accessories to give your kitchen a bit of WOW!! What I did with our splashback was, I went to Bunnings and got from each colours a few samples (the paper ones), even the ones I thought I would never use. At home we made a pre-selection, narrowed it further down and came up with a colour I would never ever have picked! It does look stunning now, maybe an idea for you to try - it does not cost a thing.

It amazes me when people put up a picture , showing one room , and no other details . Presumably , your dining area and possibly lounge are all visible too -- what are the primary and highlight colours there ? Knowing nothing else , I'd suggest a copper splashback , but then carry through the theme with copper lights ( even downlights ) in the dining area ? Or if your lounge suite and dining chairs are visible , and they are blue or green or red or yellow or orange -- go for a similar shade on your splashback . BUT personally , I wouldn't mix say blue and copper . So its a bit tricky , but stick to a theme , rather than just room by room , especially if several rooms merge together .

I think your kitchen, like most kitchens, has some very flat surfaces. No profile on the doors and panels and simple monotone colours. For this reason I would suggest that you add texture through the use of tiles. I don't think you need colour so much as a variation in the surface. These tiles from Perini Tiles in Melbourne would be a good choice. Mid grey in colour and a mix of matt and shiny and textured tiles.

I think a glass splashback is going to be a non-event. Something you won't even notice.

Hi I love the kitchen with the copper lights as a touch but I would do something really different. I think you should have something which would create texture and interest To the splash back and bring some colour to liven the kitchen up. I would paint the splash back area with a product from Dulux called Copper Patina Effect, which gives it a lovely Green,black, copper colour. Protect it by placing clear glass over it. That way you could always remove it one day and repaint with a different colour, changing the whole look again. (Dulux has it on their web site, and in case you are wondering no I don't work for Dulux). All the best in your new kitchen.

You have similar colours to us, this is ours - tile with the grey and a touch of blue. Something like this would look cool. the extractor fan hadn't gone in with this photo.

charcoal subway maybe in the irregular finish for a bit of interest- I have the pale grey and they are very complementary and complimentery

definitely use glass. a breeze to clean. It can be painted in any colour you want.

We had the same dilemma deciding on splashback to suit a combo of charcoal (Dulux Domino) and white cabinetry. We decided on Domino glass but went metallic. We love it. Glass is super easy to clean, and quicker to install than tiles. Metallic breaks the solid blob of colour look. Ours has 3 layers of the 'speckle'. You can do less or more. Ask for samples. Can send a pic if you'd like.

To help us choose, I used a photo like yours, in PowerPoint (or Photoshop if you have it), and changed the colour of the splashback to get an idea of the end result.

Dont second guess yourself too much - it'll do your head in! :-)

my second preference would be plain mirror which looks fantastic and really helps to open up the space when you have your back to the room cooking cheers

I designed my daughters all white kitchen in her new home with a mirrored splash back and it looked fabulous

Hi Siriuskey I've included a pic of my bestie's kitchen, with a mirrored splashback. (She'll probably kill me because it's looking 'lived in' in the photo, not its usual OCD tidy/magazine look). It shows marks and requires attention to keep smear free.

I agree that it's hard to choose the style without seeing the rest of the house but that a charcoal colour (same as the island cupboards) would tie in best with the colour scheme you have. Depending on the look of the house you have a lot of options to choose from and a lot depends on personal taste or budget.

Glass is easy to keep clean and is a modern look if you are not wanting to draw attention to the splashback. Mirror (plain - modern or distressed - character) is lovely if you have something nice reflected in it. If the kitchen is messy though, it doubles the mess. Subway tiles (regular or irregular, tiled in brick format or herringbone) are always a lovely classic choice - but be mindful of grout issues. Arabesque or patterned tiles add more character if you're after tiles with a wow factor. I personally love stone, marble or quartz for an elegant, timeless look and in a charcoal or grey with veins I think would look stunning with the lamps as well as tying in the white and grey cabinetry. You can also do marble tiles that are a little less exxy than a slab although in the end I was surprised that the marble didn't cost much more than the caesarstone. Choices, choices!! Good luck. I think if you ask the glass people which is the best product, we used Windex. The kitchen was used for family get togethers with lots of cooking as we all love to cook. One of us is a trained Chef and unlike cooks Chef's don't clean up!!, but it wasn't a problem. My preference is for plain mirror, it doesn't age, keep it simple

You could get a couple of pieces of plasterboard/plywood & paint them in different colours & put them against the splash back & see what you prefer.

Thanks ALL for your wonderful insight and suggestions! I have taken them on board and we've decided to go woth charcoal textured tiles to match grey cupboards!!

Yes Potsy it is an open plan living space thanks darl, but it's completely empty as its a full house reno. I will be able to carry through the colours in the kitchen when it is finished. So thanks for stating the obv ;)
