I would replace single picture with 2 to 3 pictures that are vertical possibly over the headboard. Depending on the size, display them across your headboard so that they span further than the current picture, say across the headboard but inside the shelves. In addition you might want to consider some sort of lighting that you can attach to the headboard that you can direct down rather than thinking of table lamps. I think the shelving can work, but for me would be collectors of things and never looked very nice. If you're different than me maybe you could start with something low on that top shelf with just some small things on the other ones. Good luck

@hummerd, Yes I believe you about the skylight but we have a truss roof design, which puts the room ceilings some 3m away from the actual roof and so a skylight that actually opens can't be installed in this bedroom or anwhere else in the home unles we had a cathedral ceiling, otherwise it would have been a simple procedure. Disapointed that we can't use this method but it's not to be!! A tube skylight is our only other option but we were wanting one that allows you to open and close an internal vent situated on the ceiling, as well as on the roof, our daughter has one like this but they aren't made anymore. It seems they are now only vented on the roof either permanantly or with a motor that allows you to manipulate the amount the vent is open. Price has now jumped from a standard $200 to at least $600+ and rising but none of these tube skylights have an ajustable vent in the ceiling which we would prefer. I think a really nice patterned quilt or bedspread. Try and strike a nice balance between your mums taste and yours. Make it like a little retreat for her... Include some nice hangers in the cupboard and a spot to pop a suitcase up... Like a nice wide ottoman or a wooden slat bench. I don't know what they are actually called but I picked one up second hand and they often have them at hotels. Maybe also put up some old photos of you and your mum from when you where a kid. I've seen framed old toys too... I guess just some touches to show your mum she is welcome and honoured. I have a few bedspreads and linens I inherited from my parents and my parents in law. I always put them on the bed when the respective parent visits. A dressing table would be nice too. With her own sets of toiletries. I would include in the cupboards extra blankets, a dressing gown, slippers, some extra coats and the sorts of things that the she might forget or not want to bring every time. I think its more about the little touches. What colours would she like?

The sample house looks fantastic. You have oodles of options for headboard from covered to solid, incorporating side tables or not, to ceiling feature wall, etc. you really just need to look at pics at make a personal choice
