1920's lounge room
Comments (22)Dear Bronwyn: thanks - I am an anthropologist - took a lot of linguistics and LOVE identifying regional names - I seem to do pretty well. However, yours is such a classical name - would be hard to mis-identify! :-) I am SO glad you have fallen in love with your beautiful home. I assume you are in England ?, not US, definitely go to flea-markets, swap sales and find an old stove replacement if this your concept. I don't know how big any of your bathrooms are, but we placed our double-stack in the bathroom! I also then made a very "small" partition - about 15 inches framed- which provides the idea of separatness from the bathing area. However, our bath is a rather large space - as it was the original back porch. This could free up some space in your pantry? And you might consider framing in and doing a cabinet finish for the fridge - then it would not stick out like a sore thumb. Please check out on line: Rusteoleim (paints) - they have entire new kits for refinishing cabinets -and countertops? Since you are a re-doer - perhaps having wooden countertops made would better suit your home? I would certainly NOT use granite, or something of this ilk - I think this would detract from the feel of the home. This also might give you an opportunity to save some pennies and wait to get what you really want to have - I actually did NOT have a kitchen sink for 15 years - it was in the bathroom [(one of those long old porcelain kitchen sinks (country)] because this was the only place in the home which was plumbed - OUCH! I guess the moral of the story is: I could be worse! :-)...See MorePlease help with our lounge room styling
Comments (5)Thank you for your comments and your sympathies, it is a difficult room to work with. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, behind the far wall is an enclosed garage which is used as a storage space and we are in the process of getting a shed built to move everything out of there and extend out, so the room will become more of a rectangle rather than a square and everything should fit into place nicely! We have tried different variations of furniture placement which did look nicer but weren't practical for the age of our kids, like Lego at our feet when sitting on the couch etc. I think we will leave the furniture as it is for now, however I love some of your ideas. Good point about the shag, that's gone, I will have a look for a low pile wool rug. choices flooring have some nice styles I like. I hadn't thought of incorporating a blue or terracotta toned rug, that could work well to better hide stains. I love the idea of artwork, what would you suggest, something abstract? Incorporating colours from the room or more a statement piece? I also love the idea of adding more circular elements and also a lamp to add height. Do you have any suggestions for either one? I'm also concerned the room is a bit impersonal, do you agree? Please keep the ideas coming....See MoreLounge/dining furniture dilemma - balancing early 1900's home with mod
Comments (7)Lovely sofa - traditional with a modern edge. Will look gorgeous. I think you need to balance traditional with modern but don't be afraid to incorporate the odd special antique piece which will give your rooms a nice ecclectic feel and make them look as though you have collected things over time rather than rushed out & bought them all at once. For example, most entertainment units are pretty uninspiring however if you could find a gorgeous antique cabinet & convert the doors to slide inwards you could end up with a lovely unit that disguises the TV when doors are closed which will also make your small room appear larger. As your rooms are small, if it was me I would keep it simple with clean lines as you have done with your sofa and also soft in tonings. Try to minimise the heaviness in your pieces through legs on cabinets etc. so that they float above the floor. Some ideas in pics below & some shops to visit. Don't rush - take your time & do one room at a time & it will come together beautifully. Choose big pieces first. Good luck!...See MoreNeed help with lounge room decor
Comments (27)Make the rug the statement piece! We recently styled this property and have been bombarded with questions where its from. Check out Bayliss Rugs or order through us and we can help determine the perfect size for the space too. For the coffee table- stay away from the white "cold theme". The coffee table pictured is from La Maison (also can be purchased from us).To get in contact: 1300 669 590 or kahlia@cordonydesigns.com.au...See MoreJill Rogers Interior Designer
