Tips on console or cabinet style
We just bought this house and really do not like the shape of the builtin cabinetry. We are also not able to use our bigger tv in it. We are looking for ideas to change the layout to house a bigger tv and also to make the shape appear more ‘balanced’. I’ve considered replacing the top section with a more natural colour in a single section. Any ideas will be welcomed. TIA

Comments (45)Lovely kitchen you have, and a butlers pantry is heaven. I think the shelves next to the fridge make the kitchen come undone. Why not extend the shelves along the wall. You can add books, style the shelves and have practical and design options in the space. Once you put a rug, I would do a round one like armadillo and co make the floor feature with a small round table sitting on the rug. Just search small round table and everyone from Kmart, Ikea to custom will have something in your price range. I think you need to soften the look with wooden chopping boards, a few rustic elements and maybe a collection of similar items on the top of the cabinets. Comments (16)Thanks Tilly, yes I think it'll be a really good exercise to think about how we live every day and what will support that. For example we had a BBQ on the weekend and the weather was quite cool, so my husband said how about a covered entertaining area to the rear of the house (north facing), but I'd rather have it open so the sun comes into the house every other day of the year! So we're investigating these fabric folding awnings... I might get us both to sit down and virtually go through our day to work out our ideal items. Thanks! Yes I don't want a huge footprint, and survived for 10 years in a small Victorian terrace with a 'Euro' laundry behind fold-back cupboards in the bathroom and it never bothered me, so you've reminded me that I'd much rather that space devoted to more enjoyable areas! And keen on the versatility of a multi-purpose room, sounds like such a great approach, I work part-time from home plus my family is interstate so doubling as a guest bedroom would be perfect for us. Comments (17)I agree with turning the bed parallel with the window. Bedside ‘tables’ can be a repurposed stool, and or a chair borrowed from another room. White bed linen in Queen size is ideal for a single bed giving it a luxe look and can be used after you sell. (A Queen doona with white cover will luxuriate the bed more) A painting above the bed with a throw at the foot in a colour taken from the painting, will complete the look. 6 years agoI agree to remove the upper cabinetry. I would be inclined to have someone build appropriate upper cabinet, which also wraps the wall, to balance top with bottom, and leaving plenty of space to mount your large tv. I do like the idea of a different finish to top cabinet as you are thinking about. Here's a photo of a built-in cabinet we had in our previous home's family room. I show you so you can see how different finishes were used to good effect.

Not sure if it is possible with the construction of the unit, but you could possibly remove the upright cupboards (or make up new ones) and place them further out on the edges. This would visually make the unit a lot bigger and fill the space in a bit better proportion. (If you have to make up new ones you could make them deeper for more storage)
you could then make up a simple panel at a cabinetmaker for the infill between in the same colour, which would allow the mounting of a large tv on it without to much drama.
the bulkhead over would need to be extended also like this (quick and dirty) pic below...
