Ceiling fans plus decorative light

Hi, We are still building. We have retained the raked type ceiling in living area and have panelled this and it looks great. Our dilemma is that we want to put two ceiling fans in as it is a big room and will assist with the inbuilt wood fire in winter. But we also want to put a decorative glass pendant light in the middle. Not sure about the look of fan/light/fan handing from the centre panel or distances between them. Can't go too far one way as the kitchen island bench then comes play. Just need some advice and other thoughts. Thanks Jan

The fans help with the log fire , maybe you should consider a wall mounted fan instead of ceiling they are almost as effective and swivel just like a pedestal fan. If the room is that big have you thought of a cluster of light's different heights and even if your game different shapes

What are the dimensions of the room? Will there be any other lights/things in the ceiling to consider? And is the room going to be a lounge room only, no dining table to consider? Just off the top of my head, I would probably position all three fixtures right down the centre, spaced evenly down the length of the room. If you are concerned it will be too busy, then Warren's suggestion of wall-mounted fans is an option. We looked at them for our new build, but in the end decided on ceiling fans. In any case, knowing the dimensions of room would be helpful.

Definitely add a rug with some pattern and texture to break up the conglomerate of dark colours both with the tiled floor and chocolate modular lounge. The rug you choose will then dictate what scatter cushions to select for your lounge. You may want to consider asking your landlord if a art hanging track can be installed this way you could hang a lovely print or artwork behind sofa. With an art track it is usually powder coated white and installed just below cornice and looks like part of the cornice. You are then given by the installer acrylic hanging wires that slot into this track making it versatile to hang either a series of smaller prints or one large one and you can change as often as you like without any damage to the walls. Your artwork can also be the basis for selecting a rug and scatters. You will be amazed how by adding the rug, scatters and artwork will give instant warmth and personality to your room. You may also want to add a coffee table too. If it is a particularly beautifully patterned rug that is a real feature think of a glass coffee table so the rug can be seen. For a "couple of days a year" get a pedestal fan straight on everyone and leave the features in the ceiling. Seriously...I have 12 ceiling fans in my house and two wall mounted fans...the wall mounted fans are so much more effective then ceiling (and I don't know where you live, but did you know fans have a "summer" and "winter" setting??). Most people don't. Tip: turn the fan off before changing the setting.

Hi new to all this but thought I'd pass on some fan tips; Be very selective of the shape of the fan blades. They all look stylish but in my experience the flatter the blade the less air they move. We have now gone back to the original metal fans with the blades that bend at the edge, http://regencyfan.com/industrial, our fans are more stylish than the one shown (the blade shape is nice and clear in this example). Our weather in no where near as warm as yours I'd hate for you to make the same mistake we made, twice, before we learnt. Look at the fans motor size, some of the expensive and lots of the cheap ones have small motors that don't last long, unfortunately price does not dictate quality in this case so don't get caught out. My husband is a mechanic and this is one of his "things" when every we shop for electrical items (drills, fans, pumps etc.) always make sure the motor is quality and large enough to do the job and last. How may speeds. We have 8 fans in our home, one is in our extension and was purchased at a different time; It's low speed is realllllllly slow the next one is so fast it's like a cyclone and I'm not game to try the third one in case it dismounts from the ceiling. Be careful not to mount fans too close to down lights or you get a flickering effect caused by the blade passing over the light. Try not to mount the fan directly over the dining table as it will cause food to go cold. I'm with mydesignobsession when it comes to style/look I prefer visitors see my wonderful eclectic decoration then my ceiling fans! Good luck

An architect friend designed a spiral staircase with glass bricks on the outer wall. The trade were very heavy touch end glass. Walking up and down was a rather out of world experience, but the feeling of light was amazing. I have also seen a full bathroom inner wall made of glass bricks, a very innovative idea that divided a large room into two bathrooms. The bricks had a pattern that allowed light through but made it absolutely opaque,..very attractive and scattered the light beautifully. The only solid bit of wall was where the commodes were, on either side. I have wanted to do so et hinges similar ever since, but those bricks are expensive!

The room is approx 10000 long by 6000, a very long room. It will share the kitchen, kitchen island and lounge area in front of fire. I could space them further apart but I am having pendant lights hanging over the island so wanted to stay a bit further away from that. Perhaps I am trying to fit too much in the room? Really appreciate yours and Warren's feedback.

Is that 10metres x 6 metres? What a nice big space to work with. In that case, my idea for spacing them evenly isn't going to look right. Definitely draw an imaginary line where you consider your kitchen & kitchen island space will be, THEN consider the remaining area is where the fans and feature pendant are to go. If it were me, I would have fans with longer than usual blades and a pendant that is rather large and which all complement one another (style-wise). If you draw out your room on graph paper, sketch in where the furniture will be placed, where the fireplace is, and then think about the best locations for the fans and lighting. I would imagine the pendant needs to be in the vicinity of the seating arrangement? Or possibly in the centre of the living area space? Will the pendant be the main source of light in the room or will you also have lamps? I hope this helps.

Consider the kitchen and lounge as 2 seperate areas and illuminate each differently. I would only put a fan in the lounge area, not the kitchen. And try down lights in the lounge on dimmers or add a big floor lamp for ambient lighting.
