How can I improve the ugly facade of my 1970s house?
Comments (39)Keep the brick, please don't paint or render. Both eat into your budget (rendering in particular is not cheap), and will mean more ongoing upkeep (render still needs to be painted on a regular basis and with a two-storey house, that is a lot more work). Our house is rendered and we would never have it again. Whenever the house moves, the render doesn't, so is prone to cracking or, over time, pieces even falling off. Even subtle movement can cause hairline cracks, which means regular patching and painting. Quite frankly, most people render an older house to make it look modern, but when rendering becomes passe (which I think is already starting to happen), then the house will look dated again (and render is almost impossible to remove once its on). Also, if you're in an area prone to termites, termites can get in between the render and the brickwork and you won't see the telltale signs of "mud" at the access points to let you know they're there. As far as the rest of the house goes, I totally agree with what Timandra Design recommended....See MoreIdeas for updating a 80’s house facade
Comments (4)the two doors are confusing and the glass in the laundry door is darker and makes it more obvious in the photo .. consider a a dramatic new colour for the front door and a small gable roof to create a definite entry porch with extra posts and short entry path with symmetrical planting ...the new gable could be added when you're ready to renew the roof and a light coloured roof with dark trim and a bright new front door eg Colorbond Surfmist with Basalt gutters, eaves and posts with a bright blue door?...See MoreUpdate Facade 1950s House
Comments (6)No need to reclad, chamferboard looks great painted. Change out the moulded tile roof (It look likes moulded sheet rather than cement or pottery tile) for something smarter, colorbond. Remove the ugly aluminium window hoods will go a long way to creating some street appeal. I'd also be inclined to install window boxes under the two front facing windows for some interest on the facade and to make the windows more significant. Update the garage door for something nice like a wooden barn door with windows in them, or diagonal timber. it's more in keeping with the original home. And finally some tall topiary to the right of the garage doors. Or if you intend to keep the walkway there, a nice ornamental tree and garden bed in that hole in the driveway. The proportions of the house are nice. It's just drowning under the old 1960's awnings and needs a bit of a tidy up. Will look very pretty with some minor work....See MoreBest way to update the facade of our house.
Comments (16)I look at it differently . Someone has tried to do some updates , so rather than changing the front window or trying to do a 50's homestead look or similar -- go more modern ! I'm not even sure if the roof is unpainted , or painted light boredom ( sorry , I mean grey ) , but redo it in a more modern tone , depending on your climate -- charcoal / monument if cooler , light steel grey / surfmist if warmer . Then do the trim ( gutters , downpipes , etc ) either the same as your roof , or my preference is a highlight colour -- charcoal against surfmist ; or red or yellow to get more attention ( do the front door the same if followin g that suggestion ) . Get rid of the green around the base -- boring people would go mid-grey , I'd go charcoal or similar . The balustrade and the veranda support are just horrid IMO -- go charcoal paint if on a tight budget , but I'd replace -- just a simple , clean style would suit . Doing rendered walls , glass panels , stonework wouldn't . And rip out that front fence -- I hated them when they were pool fences and not seen from the street -- so why put it along the street ? The rest has been 'covered' already -- the bins , the driveway , the lawns , then landscape ! But try and make it look 2000 ( its not going to be 2021 without big $$$ ) , don't aim for 1950 , as that was what was trying to be hidden ....See MoreUser
