Furniture Design Dilemma Living Room

living room layout and decor advice ...

Hi - take a look at my living room layout, just moved in and planning on setting it up now and need to buy furniture etc.

Key points to note:

-It's open plan currently with kitchen and dining areas.
-Tiles on floor so will need to consider rugs
-Kitchen and bench is done with a more modern look
-All was are white except one in living that's black (I know)..
-Would prefer a kid friendly layout ..

Need help on layout, sofa type and ideas on decor..

Well laid out house. Are you a tv focused family? If you are trying to minimise it, I would put the TV in the living room and keep the lounge dining screen free. Noise is then away from kids bedrooms at night. Put the kitchen table where "lounge" is written so you are not dragging food through the whole area. Corner modular lounge in the dining section (corner to kitchen) and two single chairs in the corners of the room. Storage for school bags in the corner backing onto laundry. Storage for toys up against the short wall backing on to the bathroom so you don't have to stare at the mess from the kitchen bench. If your kids are under 10 and are still playing on the floor a lot, i would omit a coffee table in favour of one or two small light tables that can be used as coffee tables against the corner of the lounge or tables for games and colouring in.

Hi KT. The first thing I see is lounge and dining areas should be swapped, so dining is closer to kitchen (maybe you had already planned to do).

Which wall is painted black and will you paint over it or leave as is for now?

Do you plan to place TV in the room marked living?

Hi everyone, I'd like to thank you all for your input. Have been a busy spring and summer, but now I'm back and able to focus on the living room. Couple of things have been done/removed since lately: 1. Leather lounge set: I've (luckily) sold the leather lounge set - absolutely great piece with great quality, but not my taste at all. It made a world difference to the living room and even dear hubby, who liked the set, did acknowledge that the difference of less furnitures is great. 2. The rug 3. The white cabinet 4. New curtains with pelmet I love the pelmet although it's old style and yes, the curtains are too short! Will amend this at later stage :) These changes have made a huge impact on the room. Also, I'm also open to change the dining table with chairs for another nice option in an attempt to make this more interesting/cozy/inviting. So, these are the only things that I won't be able to change (we may (note on may) also move house by the end of this year/early next year) # Blinds # Colour of trims and built-in bookcase # Camel back sofa - I'm happy to reupholster it though and change the fabric. This will cost $2000 but I think it's worth it since they are really comfortable and are of good quality. I'd like to integrate the white frame with the gold poster in the design - an idea is to place 3x posters on the biggest wall of the air conditioner. I'm aware that a brown frame may suit the gold poster better, but I'm so tired of the colour brown at this moment. --------- So, I now feel I'm able to adjust as per your suggestions and recommendations much easier now. Appreciate every response and idea (And sorry for the mess of papers on the desk and floor! We're busy professionals and sometimes I have to let my husband have his creative space despite my OCD when it comes to decluttering and keeping it tidy)

Ok, I see ...one possibility would be to retain the unit as shelving where it is and wall mount the tv on the adjacent wall so that you can optimise seating arrangement. Otherwise I think you are on the right track, a circular rug would work, maybe a couple of mid century chairs might look nice, you could put some trailing plants up high away from your little one, maybe a basket or two to keep toddler clutter in check would go with an eclectic kind of look. If you move to a larger space in the future, mid century chairs would be easy to pair with a couch.. I think try and bring as much storage as you can to keep the space manageable.

Hi Soshu, Megan from Bluethumb online art gallery here. I agree that you could open up the space by removing those boxy units above the TV. I would also think that because it's such a dark room, adding a mirror somewhere could help brighten up the space. I'd also suggest adding white or teal sheer curtains instead of the blockout blinds for a softer, brighter look. You've also got a great opportunity to add some artwork with that empty wall behind the couch there. Since you've already chosen an accent colour of a teal blue, why not find an artwork that matches with your colour scheme? Artwork will really help to personalise the space, especially an original piece that you love. At the moment, it does feel a little impersonal. I'd suggest going with a showstopping piece that will generate conversation the moment people spy it. To be blunt -- the room isn't really big enough ! So you have to sort out priorities , and space . You have a dining table , and a computer desk . Can you get rid of the computer desk , by having your computer tower mounted behind the couch or similar , and a wireless keyboard and mouse that you can use on the dining table ? Mount the monitor on a wall , or if you don't need in depth graphics , I understand you can use your TV ( I've heard something about the 'refresh rate' is less on a TV ? ) . Maybe even have a monitor but also the option of using your TV ? Could you use a 'breakfast bar' , probably where the computer desk is now , I know its not sociable all staring at a wall , but it would/could serve as a brakfast bar and computer workstation . Could you get rid of the dining table and chairs , and have a large coffee table , or 2 smaller ones , and eat 'casually' ( my polite way of saying eat sitting on the couch ) ? Even mounting the TV on the wall will let you get rid of the cabinet , but I gather you have gaming consoles in there ? And the present arrangement with the pot plants uses some space -- maybe some shelves with them on will still retain the plants but free up floor space ? Just some thoughts off the top of my head .

Will the island bench accomodate stools; is there room for tuck legs under? If so, stools that have backs and easy-to-wipe-clean material are better for younger children.

Just to clarify, kitchen, dining and lounge are tiled? Is living room carpeted?

I’d keep decor light coloured as guess room could be quite dark as south west facing but have dark leather couch as great with kids do long as they have their shoes off (eg buckles not good) and warm coloured rug

Yes, prefer not to have the TV in the lounge area.

I thought about swapping the dining and lounge areas as well - the reason I think the previous owners kept dining there is there is nice view out from there with a lot of glass windows overlooking the garden / back yard.

For kitchen bench it does make sense to add the Bar stools there...

The wall that's black is in the lounge.

The lounge, dining and kitchen are all tiled

The room marked living is carpeted- most likely will put in a TV if at all in there ..hoeing that will be the last room I ll furnish

Would like to start with dining and lounge area.

KT, what do you think about purpose built banquette style seating along the wall shared with laundry and the smaller wall (the one that forms a backward L)? Then you would still be able to enjoy the view through to outdoors. I'll add some photos for inspiration. Then I believe there is ample room in space behind island bench for a smallish Tulip table and some Louis Ghost chairs.

I too like the idea of an L-shaped lounge with longer section backed to kitchen/dining space, specifically one with a lower back so the view to outdoors isn't inhibited for anyone in kitchen and dining. I would position it so it was closer to wall shared with Bath, but not against the wall. A very large area rug could be placed in lounge area. An arc floor lamp or similar could provide lighting (placed just behind corner of L-lounge provided there's an electrical outlet). I hope this makes sense. I can rough sketch it and post tomorrow.

Agreed, it would be better to swap the "lounge" and "dining" areas, just because it seems to make more sense to have the dining table next to the kitchen.

You could then use the other space and have a large rug, a sofa or two, coffee table, etc. I particularly like the corner that the "laundry" room creates on the lounge. You could have an art wall, or a reading corner, and add personality to your space.
