@ Hilda Tinkle...LOVE your room...mostly love the rugs and, in my view, those artworks are as if they were purpose commissioned ! "The whole" I am sure reflects your personality! Its been very interesting watching it all grow. As for replacing the lamp stand, personally, I really like that stand both for the room proportions and... for that friendly, substantial chunky lamp. I feel...and that's "feel"....that I'd want to put some sort of novel,decorative, low, longer, narrow, open construct couchside table/magazine/book 'depository'/drink putter-on (phew) at the side of the couch ...a proportionate space away from the side of the couch...something that has room for the lamp at the end to sit exactly where it does now under the yellow painting....Or, keep the lamp stand where it is and add a little bit of decorative yet functional whimsy at the couchside. It would need to be the perfect thing...I see a little nest of small decorative tables in my mind's eye...just feel you need to relieve the substantial solid feel with something that looks light and.... airy?....hard to describe, just a mind image. How about one larger cushion among the array of small ones? I've not seen your room for a while. I love what you've done..dignified, furnished in quality items and more to the point..themed ! Imagining myself relaxing in that room along with a friend or two....find myself wanting something tall that draws focus, maybe that accentuates the purpose of the room or calls attention to the theme...just a thought. I spent my early childhood in the Pacific and was surrounded by artifacts and furnishings that had the same "feel" as your room. I am really impressed by your attention to detail and how you've managed to assemble it all so it appears purpose made to go together, Congrats on ...substance ! Where did it all start...I've forgotten....with the rugs?

I personally don't do the feminist thing of She shed, etc, I just call it MY ROOM AND IF YOU DISTURB ME YOUR CHOICE OF PUNISHMENT! Hee hee, no, I call mine my Workroom. Like you I have a ton of things to do in there! I craft, I bead, I have storage, and I occasionally just go down there with a glass of wine, turn on a CD and chill on the chair looking out at the scenery. My room is a work in progress, too. What I do is have designated spots for different work areas. So one wall has beading supplies, another wall has craft and knitting supplies and the other has storage and in the middle is a big rug where I can lay down and veg or actually do yoga if I so desire. For you, I suggest you do a mix, since your walls are limited, put a chair and a table (can be longer like a bench if you have the room) along that hip height window. You need natural light for any painting, etc you like to do. The cupboard you mention can become your storage area for the painting equipment. You mention you wish to study too, so having a half side of the table for painting and the other half for studying should do the trick. The fact you want to exercise, run nuddies, relax etc can be done in the middle of the room. Without dimensions I can't really offer much else. Is it possible to get a few pics of the area with something in perspective, (kitchen chair is easiest) if there is no furniture already in there? Sounds like a hodgepodge in the Heaven Haven. ;)

It sounds about right, if not quite reasonable. Flagfall allowance for painting component I put on moderate sized renos is $35K+GST. For a large new custom residence with various materials we're talking $50K+. 10 years ago you we used to talk about ballpark 10k inside 10K outside but it's moved well on&up like everything.. Also painters now understand how much value and the difference painting injects into a property. Think about the difference if you're selling a house like yours on the perception of a potential buyer. For the purpose of the conversation, if you try and sell a "tired" property for say ballpark $X, you might eventually concede/accept and offer for less than $X. Alternatively if you invest in painting (& other stuff like landscaping and strategic updates) you may well end up well beyond $X + improvements..... I digress, back to the painting topic, as Retro said you're paying for prep and application. It's predominantly a labour expense (the cost of the paint is virtually irrelevant in the whole scheme of things and cost of paint of certain quality is a whole other topic of conversation where false economy runs rife) and minimal "technical" skill from the application aspect, but the skill is in the experience of executing proper treatment of various surfaces and so the finish is as high quality and as long lasting as possible. You could probably get a "cheaper" quote, but likely the end results may not last as long and I bet then you'll then be paying again down the line with a higher quality/cost option after being disappointed with the results of going with a lower cost option...... Being recommended by 3 separate people says a lot about this option for you. Rather than "question" the quote, perhaps go back to them and get them to explain it, just so you understand what's involved with the job, and so you don't feel like you're paying more than what's reasonable - after that conversation you may have a different opinion of it!
