Ideas on how to make this patio welcoming and usable

hi all, I had a busted spa sitting in the ground with a pool fence. Took it out and gave away then filled the hole recently to make the space somewhat usable. I'm stuck for ideas on what to do or change and would really appreciate some ideas on how I can make this small courtyard space better presented and usable?

I would add a gorgeous table and chairs, lots of greenery, even a small water feature to add interest, add interest with pots keeping to a uniformed colour, even a corten screen on wall would be fab

Comments (10)The area looks as though it will be a real hot-box. And the dull, dark colour will absorb the heat. I would suggest that you consider a much lighter and glossy paint for the surrounding walls and then the large pot in the centre. Many succulents burn as badly as any other plant when exposed to high heat, especially when in a pot. Also for consideration after changing the wall colour is a small tree like one of the smaller crepe myrtles. Once you have a canopy you can then underplant with small ground covering succulents or liriopes. I would steer clear of the white stones - they are a fad and will die out. EVERYone is using them and they are really boring. We need more trees in our gardens and there is definitely a place for a small tree in every garden. Trees provide depth. Comments (36)Biggest Thank you to everyone who has commented and given me such good practical advice for updating my little front patio/porch area. Before I depart again and forget to update? This is how it looks, I am probably at a later stage going to work out how to add a wider sill as suggested, however it does look so much better than before. Such timely advice has given me the motivation to get it done. I have left the roller shades on one side just to allow a bit of privacy from the neighbours and wind/sun. 6 years agoThank you so much Dr Retro and Julie for the feedback and suggestions. I really do appreciate it. Both ideas sound good.
I like the idea of a corten fence and of course Julie's idea would be much easier on the budget.
However, if I was to go the route of installing a composite deck, I've a couple of questions. I've taken some pictures from different angles and I have old style brick pavers that make a walkway leading to the front door. Facing the front door and to the right is a fairly large deck and to the left is the courtyard area. In your professional experience, would you suggest installing a composite deck that joins the current deck and also completely remove the brick pavers that form the walkway leading to the entrance and decking that as well? I'm finding it hard to imagine how it looks and plus, this area will completely be exposed to all sorts of Queensland weather.
The house is situated on a bit of a slope hence the walkway that was previously built has slanted and will eventually need change.
Perhaps I could reuse the current cream pavers as the walkway leading to the front?

6 years agoAnother idea would be to replace your path with steppers , I love steppers and pebbles together, very stylish, your garden looks very tropical, I would add big leafy plants to bulk up around entry and add lovely seating and it could look fabulous
