Would the new black butt flooring eventually look the same, once there has been some wear and tear? I'd be tempted to go with the same flooring as in the other areas for consistency. If you use the same installers, hopefully it will "mesh" in a few years.

On a home renovation show, I saw them remove some of the existing planks near the join / edge between rooms and replace them with new planks to help soften the difference between the old and new flooring.

Not sure but I think if you use the same timber and perhaps run a couple of planks across in a different direction between the old and the new and have the whole lot re sanded and sealed it could work. Try sampling an existing timber plank and a new with doing this.

If you put down new blackout you will have contrast for the time being

Then as it ages and blends with the existing timber, you will have it matching

Win/ win

The idea of lifting a few boards and blending them with the new ones is clever

If you use rugs to disguise the junction of old and new, the distance created may be enough to trick the eye into seeing continuity

The Blackbutt itself (assuming you pick the same plank size) will still be the same....

What will be different is that over time the UV light changes the polish colour of your existing floor to a darker shade, particularly if you used an oil based polyurethane. With the oil based it tends to turn yellow after about 12 months depending on the amount of sun.

The simple answer is to factor in the cost of having the original floor completely re-sanded (ie remove the polish) so you have a green (raw) timber to match the new.

I think you will find that this will be worth the extra cost as it then becomes a completely brand new floor that matches and will look as if it was always done that way.

Alternatively, you can have the existing floor buffed back slightly and then re-coated as part of the whole floor install. You can then wait 12 months and the colour will start to align.

Depends upon the set-up/scale and of course budget, but we regularly blend/stagger new timber flooring into/with existing areas and it usually is very successful if of course you (a) stagger transition and (b) re-sand/refinish. It's either maintain consistency with blackbutt or accept a completely different carpet finish - I wouldn't advise mixing and matching different timber flooring types or colour unless the areas are completely separated by a different finish.
