How can I make my rental room my own?
Comments (18)I would start by looking at colours you love. Plants and greenery is not everyones taste, but it may be yours. You can put it in a vase, basket or something that adds texture and also keep in mind the size needed for the overall picture. It is better to choose things you can easily move if and when the time comes, so heavy earth filled ones will perhaps cause you some issues if moving on your own or if you have a rental with stairs. Getting back to colours - if you want a neutral colour scheme then make that the foundation you start with (like a blank canvas). In the photo, your room appears to have a neutral colour scheme at present for your bed, cushions, carpet etc. You can make it warm and cozy with contrasting cushions, throw, or plants but this is not necessary if you want to stick to all neutrals. Neutral colours generally have warmth added with shades of darker colours that enhance or act as contrast. These can be variations of one colour, picking up a flow that is good to the eye. Brown can be the contrast if you choose or you could have another choice that adds just that bit of dark and light. You may want to choose items that bring in texture as well as colour contrast. Pick out the colour of your accessories (wall art, flowers, candles or what you like) and have them work with, instead of being totally alienated from the whole. Drapes/curtains/blinds generally come with the rental property, so if these are neutral in colour, they should work with other colours you choose. If you are looking for warmth, choose warm colours; if cool, then choose cool colours for bed linen etc. Warm colours generally go with warm colours and cool colours with cool ones. Often they do not mix. As mentioned previously the same colour can be used but perhaps different shades, to produce light and dark. Tidiness is a habit we all would like to adopt, not always easy if you lead a busy life, but when time permits, put things away that need to be and it will make the whole picture also a bit clearer for you to work out what you want to create. Going to shop displays or searching the internet for ideas is also a great help. Often one can immediately say you like something or you don't. By doing this you will learn what your taste is and work along those lines. Photos are an excellent help to yourself as well as to shop assistants who are ready to advise what may work. Comments (33)It's just that the carpet doesn't sit nicely with the wall colour. You need some accent colour in there so your chair is fine but I would add or replace some of the cushions on the lounge. The artwork is over your head so bring that down to eye level and I would look for a new colour for the wall as that is the easiest to change. Hopefully you don't live in a too warm climate as the carpet is a warm colour and the toning the wall will add to the warmth. I realise that grey is very popular at present so my other suggestion would be a huge grey mat to cover a much larger part of the existing carpet....See MorePlease Help Houzzers! Comments (18)I'am thinking that I might have this around the wrong way but it can be reversed. My thoughts for your holiday accommodation in beautiful popular Marysville, You will have accommodation for, two couples. ?singles and two families with two plus kids. If I'am going away as two couples or families would want the QB rooms to offer the same fit out, ie: both with ensuite, which I would do as wet rooms, I don't want to flip a coin seeing that I'am paying 50%! The kids Bunk room could sleep 8 or 7 with a cupboard under one of the bunks, the kids will have a ball sharing, windows would be long narrow ones. The living dining kitchen has heaps of seating/ or naps with using built in seating along two walls The verandah, needed sit down to remove skis which can double as storage, these would reflect the indoor window seats, Banquette seating...See MorePlease help me ensure that my bathroom renovation is correctly located
Comments (20)Oklouise, do you mean like doing a self contained granny flat but attaching it to the back of the house and using a deck (indoor/outdoor living) extension on the original house as the roof/ceiling to the granny flat? That is a good idea that I hadn't considered. I think I would have to make the ground higher because I believe the rules have changed regarding minimum habitable ground level since the original house was built. The inside walls of the house are 2.7 metres and so there may be some scope to step up to the deck addition (not sure how this would look though...not ideal). It could end up getting quite expensive doing the extra downstairs room as appealing as it sounds. Most additions that I have seen on Houzz appear to work out at about $3000 per sqm (a lot more than the $1500 per sqm that is often reported generally). I keep thinking of having the planned ensuite just a walk in robe in order to avoid having a deck backing onto a bathroom (and to keep costs down), but I doubt I would save much by not doing the second bathroom given that the plumbing for the second bathroom is largely just an extension of what is happening for the "main" bathroom....See MoreIlluminide Interiors
