ADVICE NEEDED - What color should I paint the door??
Comments (17)Can you post any more photos including the staircase, and how the room next to the staircase is accessed interesting extension not following in the traditional manner of the house, Always follow KISS, keep it simple S for the best result. You could add a traditional front door in black but I don't think it necessary as from what I can see in the photo is the entrance and door already have a lot of character. The lovely Picket will look less fussy if done in one colour quoting Taking the new build/old build divide quite literally, the existing cottage has been redefined as a crisp white entity. In a street of Heritage vernacular, where every architectural shift is picked out in a nuanced tone, this is a drastic departure in itself. Add to this the decision to present the new addition in solid black, and the radical nature of the build becomes apparent (Dulux low sheen black and Lexington white). http://www.wrightsonstewart.com.au/wilston-project...See MoreExterior paint colour help

Comments (13)Paint is relatively cheap , it would tie the 2 'halves' together if done at least half way right -- that is part of my thinking on keeping the filligrees too -- they add interest and even a hint of class and a bygone era , but they are consistent across the buildings . But to do weatherboards over the brick , you either need to do 'fake' door and window surrounds , and then your doors and windows set back in ; or remove the doors and windows , do the weatherboarding and surrounds , and reinstall the joinery 'further out' . I guess you could try glueing the boards on , but they'll still be 50-60mm 'deeper' , but if you do say 50x50mm battens then weatherboard , you are adding at least 100mm to the window and door depths . A lot of $$$$ to not achive a heap IMO ....See MoreDoes a street-facing wall need to have windows to look "right"?
Comments (24)i would also omit the clerestory windows as the focus should be from the inside looking out, keeping the fireplace central allows for symmetrical joinery and the couches can then be placed to allow for a walkway and cabinets/shelves along the bathroom wall and keeps through traffic from obstructing a view of the fire, TV and the pool....keeping in mind that the only time we ever look directly at the external wall so carefully is on the plans... in the real world we see the wall looking close up from ground level in the side yard or from across the street from an angle but a simple faux chimney added to the external wall could be enough interest and/or if there's space for attractive landscaping a tall window matching the main house and a glass door could add cross ventilation, late afternoon sun and interest viewed from inside and out but consider a wider landing, steps and perhaps a porch roof if the side door will be used regularly...See More- 6 years ago
