Flooring Design Dilemma Entry

Flooring Entrance

I have a problem choosing flooring as my husband is building a two storey home and the entrance is all glass from the front door to the top floor

My question is what type of flooring would suit keeping in mind the stairs will be timber with glass balustrading The house is near the beach and I don't want to be a slave to keeping the entrance clean from footprints and scratching

The lead in to the entry will be a timber decking

To add to my dilemma I wish to have a grey wood grain tile in upstairs

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated

HI,

With timber and glass, a concrete floor could be stunning and easy maintenance. I am very fond of a beautiful hand made tile but that can get quite expensive if the area is large. good luck.

Polished or matt finished concrete will do the trick - super easy to clean, you dont have to worry about scratching or water!

Hi Donna - Look for a company that offer a 10-year warranty and a product that complies with Australian Standards. There are some companies that provide a 'kit' for your builder to install to make it a little bit cheaper again. There are also products that have a 'rack and pinion' design which minimises maintenance and eliminates the need for a motor pit - just do a google search for "dumbwaiter rack and pinion' . Hi cjones2011 I would place a console on the right hand wall and remmove the planter box from the corner. Position a table lamp on the console if you have a powerpoint, or get creative with an led candle in a lantern base, add 1-2 special styling elements on the console like a vases. Some storage can be obtained with the choice of console with drawers but avoid any clutter. A mirror or artwork on the wall above the console and a floor rug to soften the tiles would complete the area. PS wallpaper on the wall will give this area some extra wow. Best wishes. Is the first pic you posted an older one , maybe off the for sale ad ? It looks several shades yellower , but the gardens are quite different too . So that leads me to conclude it is fading on its own account -- that makes it easier IMO , just do nothing and it'll fade more ! Buttery yellow and brown were 80's , and pretty naff now , but instead of black , I'd go a Japanese Black -- a bit more matt , even blue hues there too -- more interesting , again just my opinion . The terracota does look slightly out of proportion , but lighter walls , darker trim and the orangeness of the terracota for interest would be my go , but then I'm not a fan of too much white on walls -- I'd prefer the 'relaxed casual' of a beige , jap black and terracota to crisp whites . I also assume that timber and the area to the 'right' of the stairs is the area closest to the street ? No matter what you do ( I'd go Jap Black stain on the wood , but do what YOU want ) I'd look at a bark garden or rock garden , with probably cactus and flax and reds and yellows and greens -- the timber looks too much in proportion to the render in the picture , so i'd soften that ( basically hide part of it ) . I like the character and it can get even better -- a great base ! Well done !

No matter what flooring you choose, it will still require regular cleaning from sand, pebbles, dirt, etc, but I do get your point. We have polished concrete floors throughout and our very long drive is topped with graduated sizes of stone, with the large area immediately in front of and surrounding the entrance having the smallest stones. They are always tracked into the house; the removal of shoes is not always a worthwhile option, which is why we chose concrete for its durability and easy maintenance. Sand would probably irritate me more, but I think that comes with the territory. From the bit you have described, Annie, your house sounds like it will be spectacular and in an enviable location. You could put an outdoor shower/tap to rinse off too! - saves the sand becoming an issue. I live across the road from the beach and we all rinse our feet under the tap (including fur babies) before we go inside. I find it saves me vacuuming more than once a week.
