Changing a shower head

This one is for the plumbing pro's....

Our bathroom and en-suite both have a shower head that is attached to the ceiling (see highlighted in photo).

It's very impractical because:

- It's not adjustable in height or direction.

- It's impossible to use it to clean the shower screens and tiles (the water pressure is not great either).

I would like hand-held shower heads installed in both showers, hopefully without too much work, cost, removal of tiles etc.

Is there an adaptable, hand-held shower head available that could replace the existing head?

Or would a new hand-held one need to be plumbed and fixed to the wall?

Both showers have a mixer tap on the wall.

Any suggestions, ideas or estimate of cost would be greatly appreciated.

you'll need a plumber to check the existing pipes but you may be able to access inside the wall from an adjoining room (easier and cheaper to replace plasterboard than tiles) and be able to add a new shower with a reachable shower rose as well as a handheld but i hope you have a few spare tiles or can steal some from a less obvious place ...best of luck with the plumber but research suitable new showers with handheld and adding the plumber's time and repairs expect at least $2-$3 thousand but well worth it for a more comfortable bathroom

Hi, thanks, that's a great suggestion! Directly on the other side of the shower wall, there is a small vanity and mixer tap (inside a WC) which will all be removed during some remodeling very soon. Any holes in the plasterboard will be concealed by new cabinetry. Hopefully all of this will make it easier for a plumber.

Why don't tilers leave spares any more? :)

They are not wells rated and often don't fit the plumbing fittings. You can try them by all means but by the time you pay for postage etc it often doesn't work out cheaper. Unfortunately these types of taps that you are after always come with a price tag, you get what you pay for cheap taps don't last long.

You will need to re waterproof the whole lot if you try to take it off and replumb. There is nothing wrong with it functionally and the picture you have is just a picture of how it can look like not on how it should look. Placement is personal preference or at the installers discretion if you didn't specify. IMHO it looks good as they are both at the same height and it looks better , also not a fan of doing or having what is the "norm" or what everyone else has.

You may be able to do some research on aged care appliances. One of the main adjustments families do for relatives ageing at home is to install a hand held shower for assisted showering. I'm not sure how stylish they are but worth a look.

if you don't have any matching tiles consider a vertical or horizontal stripe in a different tile...but save the changes until you're ready to do both bathrooms together and you should be able to make some savings on labour costs..
