Need some art/decor ideas for my dining area and lounge

Hello

Well we have an open kitchen, dining and living room. On the dining area(last picture) , looks like its missing something on the wall. I did put some frames and picture on one of the wall (looks weird no ?)

but I don't know what to put on the big wall. And then we have the lounge area which I think it looks too dark and doesn't match with our dining area. I was thinking about a L shape cream sofa (we bought a brown sofa because we have a 5 years old son and a dog...even if our dog doesn't sit on the sofa he has black hairs :-). Also a interior designer from a furniture shop came to our place while ago and told us not to put a L sofa. The thing is that we don't have so much space to put two armchair and L shape looks like more confortable. What do you think ?

Any advices/comments would be more than welcome :-)

You have quite a nice industrial look with your shelves and dining area, I would pull your table out to be more centred in the space, a copper round mirror on where your current pictures are and hang a large abstract on large wall, a lovely big plant would look great near window, a beautiful bowl on the table...gorgeous.

I can totally imagine a large African painting or print, as it would tie in well with the African type decor pieces you already have. for example my African Rain print (1300x870mm), Matumaini (900x900mm) or Suri Girl below. Otherwise if you aren't keen on the African theme. OK, I have lots of ideas with that brief; Starting with the floor, I think a big cosy knitted/plaited style rug like this one would set the tone. From there I think a round coffee table (maybe in a dark timber not unlike your kitchen to keep the colour story working between the spaces) to help with the movement of people within the space and finally I would repeat a modular sofa to maintain the number of seats you require. I'd consider the sofa in a donkey brown (grey/brown). I would replace the side table with a round side table that is in a new material (metal or ceramic) but same sort of colours to layer up the textures. Cushions on the sofa should then be various textures but continuing the same colours. The entertainment unit I would then select something that is textural like this. I would have a big piece of timber artwork or installation over the sofa something like these . Have fun with the space. Sophie

Tsk tsk... Art at the least is something which resonates with you, for any reason, great Art is a bit different..... Buy a prepared canvas and some colours you like and have at it. Then hang it up on the wall.... I would suggest a large horizontal canvas close to the width of the sofa for that wall.

I think an L shaped cream sofa that you suggested would be really nice and certainly be very comfortable and show off your gorgeous Kilim cushions and ottoman beautifully and lighten the room, add a lamp a great planter for the coffee table , if you scotchguard your sofa it will be so much easier to wipe off any little spills.

coffee table too small, bring right lounge out from wall. The rug doesn't go with your dining side I'd suggest a lighter rug before changing lounges as it's a more economical fix.

A rug under the dining area in a colour from the rug eg. Dark olive or red would help tie the areas together (indoor/outdoor type rug perhaps to survive the 5yo). Perhaps you could try using the artwork from above your shelves on the blank dining wall instead? A small but lush, leafy indoor plant in a vibrant pot in the centre of the table could finish off the dining space. Try light-coloured, textured cushions on the sofas rather than changing the furniture altogether and consider pulling the sofa in front of window with sheer curtains out from the corner (and store the toy box in the corner instead). Would a slim armchair (in light fabric colour) fit diagonally opposite here (if you need more seating?) or would it block walkways/doorways? I find an L-shape sofa is comfy for snuggling up with family but it doesn't provide extra seating when guests are over and having conversation -not as much seating where you can face toward each other and have personal space/not be stuck in the corner etc.

It’s ok to have a blank wall - some article on houzz about beauty of negativie space Living is too dark and too brown Agree with above replace rug not sofas and I’d also consider painting walls bright warm white (eg dulux white polar quarter which I have with brown blind and some brown wood furniture Definitely need some colour green or blue plant would be great

I love your table and chairs! I think a cream lounge would help lighten the room. I would reuse your current cushions and add some coppery gold colours in cushions or throws and some pieces on your shelves. Perhaps remove your mat altogether? You have a lovely looking floor. The artwork is working at the moment. To make it work remove the big picture and the others need to go in similar frames. I like the mirror that Julie suggested, also her inspirational pictures. I am adding a few that might give you some more inspiration. I thought the two black chairs might be a workable idea with one lounge? I thought the timber backed lounge would look great with your table.

I really like the living area you have now!

It is boho/ international traveller in style

I'd keep it how it is - just add some living things - big plants, as Julie Herbert suggests and maybe goldfish in a round bowl Also continue the gold theme you have started with the dining chairs by adding something in that same tone like a lamp base with patterned shade on the side table in the corner near the sofa

At the moment Target has some lovely cane chairs with black metal legs at $50/each If you placed 2 of those opposite the sofa you have, the space would be more cosy

As others have said, moving the dining table out about 1 metre would be better visually Add a vase of greenery or bowl of fruit Continue your gallery of frames around the corner so there is continuity and balance It is also quirky, which adds personality and a talking point!

Megan from online art gallery, Bluethumb, here. I'm loving the mix of industrial and bohemian pieces you have! I believe that a statement artwork above the dining room table would look great, especially one that balances the two interior styles you have working for you.

Some ideas for styling would be to keep the space feeling fresh with some plants, perhaps some succulents or native flowers on the dining room table. This would fit perfectly with the trees in Ron Brown's piece!

Hi Ange,

As a general rule of thumb, a picture frame should be placed at eye level or "gallery level" on the wall so that your space feels level and is easier on the eye.

I'd suggest breaking up the dark and cream tones in your room, you could some vertical wall gardens or disks in the dining area. I'd also suggest changing out your current rug with something a bit smaller and maybe cream. Feel free to check out some inspiration here: https://evergreenwalls.com.au/
