only problem with having anything "not in the middle" is to make sure the cabinet maker knows that's what you prefer...but it's difficult to be precise without knowing the size of the whole room..please post a plan showing all the measurements

oklouise, this is still a mock-up and will be submitted to the architect for the drawings. But yeah, it's best to have the actual dimension.

another variation for you

we added our double sink and dishwasher to the pantry but we did put a small single undermount sink in the island with a 3 way tap for filtered water, hot/cold. its so handy for adding water while cooking or getting the kids drinks, emptying out the fridge. I would definitely recommend it, nothing worse than having to go to the pantry to fill pots and its a long walk when something is dripping! a small undermount isnt even that noticable.

We have just started to move in so to be honest I haven’t cooked a lot but I was in two minds whether to put it there or not, I originally didn’t have one there, now that it’s in im so happy I decided on it. I’ve 3 young kids and the thoughts of walking to the pantry with a pot to drain boiling water is a recipe for disaster for my crew! Honestly, it’s not even noticeable because it’s under mount, and if you’ve chairs on your island bench and you’ve a guest sitting there-you don’t have to keep doing into the pantry mid conversation :) the sink I choose was the Franke Ancona, it’s about 300 x 400 I think. The seemless look of an island bench without a sink is lovely but I think for a busy house like mine I really needed it, even just for topping up the veg with water!

If it's not an issue, I would stick on this plan. Otherwise I'm thinking the following options: YES

1. Put single sink in the lower-left area of the island bench /

2. Put single sink along with the stove. Full size sink

3. Remove the wall that separate the double sink from the stove. This way, you have continuous bench from stove to double sink YES this will be the best also for handling pots with hot water, you don't want to be doing this into a small island sink with people sitting or walking around the island

I'm the main cook in our household and based on my experience with an island that's been kept clear as you describe, I'd suggest you think about how you do want to use your island ahead of time. In practice, our lovely clear island is a glorified room divider - I rarely use it when cooking. Instead, I do all the prep in a small area between the cooktop and the sink and although there's good lighting there since we included a long low window below the overheads, the best outlook is from the island into the room. Quite honestly, the only time I use the island is when the oven is in use because it's the closest and most convenient surface.

I've always thought dishwasher in the pantry was a great idea, but don't forget, you'll then need to transport all those dishes back out to the main kitchen to put them away, so makes taking them out to wash and bringing them back to put away fairly labour intensive. Unless you're regularly entertaining, might be overkill? I guess that's why in all those home reno shows they install two dishwashers, one in each space! Wherever you decide to put it, certainly couldn't hurt to make provision for a second dishwasher in the other space? You can then fairly quickly and easily correct the error if you got it wrong, or add a second.

I have my cooktop in the island and the sink & DW on the other bench. we do everything on the island, except rinsing the vegies. All other cooking, pizza preparing meats chopping veggies etc is done on the island, wouldn't have it any other way. I would remove the wall between the kitchen and pantry leaving it open, we have our dinner dishes in a draw in the Island so unloading DW onto island and into the drawers is easy. Then when serving meals easy access to plates once again. cheers

Ramcub you need to designate another place nearby for dumping stuff, it works, if they don't take readily to it just keep removing any thing dumped onto the island to the other spot cheers

Hi Marvin, the oil will splatter no matter where the cook top is placed but does depend on what you are cooking, there are several options for suspended ducted rang hoods. You may not believe it but we don't need one as we have long sliding windows above the sink and large sliding doors approx 1200 away from the bench top. My son is a chef and believe me he can cook up a storm, he also loves the cook top in the island. cheers

Love to Marvin, we don't have WIP our house didn't allow space for one in our reno with out taking from the bedroom next to the kitchen, instead we have a bank of 2 x 800 and 1 x 400 pantries with drawers so as to use the whole 600 .depth.

It does look yellow in the photo because it's so over coloured, it's Plywood with a shadow line, our island is 2.700 x 1200 so this was the most cost effective material. When it gets a light sand when needed I will use a different 2 pot though

Hi Marvin that's always a good idea when space is available, I had that in my last house but didn't find a need for it this time with just 3 people and having the chef in our family he likes things zoned, he's not concerned about the old triangle thinking to make things work cheers.

Speak with your plumber, he will let you know whats involved, do you have any drawings of how it would be placed, they can be very helpful, for washing veggies and family members getting water. How big is you island

Hi Marvin, Just a quick comment the fridge to island looks too close, approx 800, Island to bench is only 900 hundred and should be a min 1m. do you have a plan that shows more of your floor plan.

The cabinets in the WIP would be better to run along and off the sink side but you should have cabinets on both sides, we need to do a floorplan showing this and a longer bench on the back wall.

The WIP is 2.15 wide, basic cabinets are 60cm deep so if you were to have that down both sides that would allow 95cm walk way. but you could have 60cm lower cabinets and 30cm wall open shelves or with doors on one side and say 40cm open shelves on the other for food storage which would give 1.15 walk way

Yes the fridge will need extra allowance, I think we should re draw your kitchen today to see what fits best for you cheers

I will try with this, I think the pantry could be reduced in width to allow more kitchen space but that could make the linen smaller, once I have the measurements it will be easier to plan. Is a Large WIP important?

Marvin, Siriuskey has been giving some great feedback, and sorry late to the party.

I am currently designing our kitchen/pantry layout and will have a layout similar to you with the dilemma of island sink and single/double sink in pantry.

With help from houzzers, we decided to keep the double sink on the island as we mainly handwash the dishes, and put the dishwasher with island. I see that if your island bench is 2m long, a double sink would be tight, and probably should do away with a drainer. We will keep a huge deep single sink in the pantry to put the big dishes/hide away party dishes away from view.

We thought about the single sink on island and double sink in pantry. Again, as we handwash, we preferred the idea of being able to do this in the open area, not towards a wall. Also, where will you store all your dried cutlery, dishes, cups etc. You wouldnt want to walk too far and would be good to be in proximity to where you will dry things ( dishwasher or drainer ).

I made a mock-up last night but not sure if the changes i made will still fit. I've convert the linen to WIL although not sure if the modification i made is enough. I'll send this through to my builder.

1. I have to do undermount sink to look good but then I need a drying rack beside it. so logically the the normal sink is better functionally but no pleasing to the eye :).
2. Wife doesn't want a mess in the island bench. also, she wants to utilize the whole thing when we host parties (food in the bench).
3. I prefer facing the window to see my garden/landscape while washing. And if we decided to use the DW, atleast, it's all there
4. Normal double sink and DW will come together in the butler. once the plates are dried up, we can store them in the cabinet?

The island is now 2.4 wide x 1.2 deep

The cooktop is in the island as I have in my house with the sink and DW opposite for easy clearing of dishes, A larger dirty hand washing sink in the pantry

Stacked ovens on same wall as fridge can face towards Island or towards bench for easy put down.

If you prefer both cook top/sink/DW will fit onto back wall with a long glass splash back behind them

I have added a pocket door to close of any mess in the pantry.

The laundry has a 1200 x 600 linen cupboard, to add to the one in the passage way. cheers
