Hi Kelly. Thanks for your message. It is wood flooring and we did have to take the tiles up and put a new substrate floor in. When working with such high quality wood, you want to ensure you have a perfect floor to lay it on. Plus it had to be secured/ nailed down, so needed the substrate to attached it to.
