Help me decorate my living room
Hi Everyone,
Seeking some help and advice on how to go about decorating and designing the living room. A short brief :
Color :-

Beige carpet, ivory walls and tiles and a steel/storm gray sofa that has a cool blue undertone. We got this 3*3 modular sofa only for how comfortable it is , esp for those games and movie nights. We could not find anything this comfortable in a beige/taupe color ( to match with walls etc ) . Also , the only other grey available was charcoal and I thought that might make the place look cold. The TV unit I managed to get is in acacia whitewash wood color.
Space layout :-

There is a lot of space next to the sofa for a side table ( and a floor lamp may be ) . There was limited space for the tv unit as we did not want to block the way from the entrance to the living. So I got a TV unit in 160 cms that sits 50 cm high.
Help needed with :-

1) What wall decor I should get for both the walls above the sofa ? All paintings or a paintings and mirrors or something else ?
2) What color accents, cushions and accessories will go with this icy gray sofa ? Should I warm it up using gold and metallic or use turquoise/navy cushions and wall art ?
3) Does the TV unit color, style and size match well with the sofa or does the sofa look too overwhelming and giant ? Should I mount the tv on the wall ?
4) Should I introduce an area rug to pull everything together at the end ?
5) What should I get for the space next to the sofa ? A side table and a floor lamp ? Would a marble side table with metal legs and a white wooden floor lamp go well ? ( pic 2 )
6) Should I replace the blinds at the back with white/ivory ?
P.S -I cannot paint the wall.

Comments (25)Hi everyone, I'd like to thank you all for your input. Have been a busy spring and summer, but now I'm back and able to focus on the living room. Couple of things have been done/removed since lately: 1. Leather lounge set: I've (luckily) sold the leather lounge set - absolutely great piece with great quality, but not my taste at all. It made a world difference to the living room and even dear hubby, who liked the set, did acknowledge that the difference of less furnitures is great. 2. The rug 3. The white cabinet 4. New curtains with pelmet I love the pelmet although it's old style and yes, the curtains are too short! Will amend this at later stage :) These changes have made a huge impact on the room. Also, I'm also open to change the dining table with chairs for another nice option in an attempt to make this more interesting/cozy/inviting. So, these are the only things that I won't be able to change (we may (note on may) also move house by the end of this year/early next year) # Blinds # Colour of trims and built-in bookcase # Camel back sofa - I'm happy to reupholster it though and change the fabric. This will cost $2000 but I think it's worth it since they are really comfortable and are of good quality. I'd like to integrate the white frame with the gold poster in the design - an idea is to place 3x posters on the biggest wall of the air conditioner. I'm aware that a brown frame may suit the gold poster better, but I'm so tired of the colour brown at this moment. --------- So, I now feel I'm able to adjust as per your suggestions and recommendations much easier now. Comments (11)The right coffee table, throw and wall art are not going to be enough to disguise the fact that you have downsized from a much larger home with your large, dark, formal furniture that dominates a compact room. Have you considered moving pieces to other rooms, or selling it, and buying clean-lined, contemporary style furniture off eBay? This style will fit the proportions of your room, and make it easier to live with your dust free strategy. The beauty of second-hand furniture is that when you can afford to upgrade you can sell it again on eBay. and recover your costs. Never paint perfectly good pieces of timber furniture as it will devalue the pieces. Sell them as is, somebody will cherish them as they are. I would keep the couch, decide on the tone of your new timber floor, and use these two elements to decide on the rest of your colour scheme. Your celing fan/light is also a distraction, so replace with something sleek and contemporary that is not such a feature. Your room layout is problemmatic with the number of doors coming into the room, but it is hard to suggest a better stategy without a floorplan. Comments (9)In that room I would go a bold patterned rug. It's a low contrast room as so much of the existing colours are harmonising. I like the distressed patterned rugs you've chosen but I think you should steer away from pastel versions and go a bit braver with a brighter colourway. Your room can certainly take it and I think you will be more pleased with the higher contrast. You also need a very large rug (3mx4m) otherwise as you've found with your existing rug, it's too insignificant against the scale of the room and furniture to make a reasonable impact. While the rug size I've mentioned seems huge you have to remember it's going to have your couch and ottoman sitting on it and then the room will be framed by a wide band of your floorboards. A rug that size will be in scale. To finish off, pick out a colour or two from your rug and put cushions in those same colours on your lounge. 6 years agoI love all the suggestions so far .... I think a marble side table would look stunning in this space or even a nest of tables that can be used around the room then stored together when not in use. We can custom make to any size you need. Good Luck !

Ok. So here s the deal. I got myself a beautiful floor lamp only to realize that the lamp's legs are oak in color and the tv unit in the same setting is whitewashed acacia. I also have a light planter next to the lamp that's light wood tone too. Now here are my concerns :-
1) Is it advisable to have two different wood tones (yellow and white) in the same setting ? My sofa legs , though hidden are a dark mahogany color and the tv unit is an industrial one with dark grey metal legs. So sofa, unit and lamp all have different legs.
2) I have quite some space left next to the sofa after the lamp. The current round metal side table is not fitting and I d be replacing it. Am leaning towards a light wooden side table like one in the pics. Now if I get that, should its legs match the lamp( will be next to it ) or the the unit ? Also, should the side table match the hallway table ? I am using the sofa Ottoman as a coffee table and still looking for a hallway.
3) What else can I put in that space ? A plant ? Decorative vases ? Baskets ?
4) Does my sofa look silver in the led cool white light ? Should I change the light to warm or add some warm cushions ?

Loved above comment, I think you will be able to blend in your furniture beautifully, you don’t need everything to match as it looks a little too contrived, once you choose your artwork and accessories ie: cushions, throws , candles everything will fall into place, found this gorgeous table for inspiration for your entry, I think you will make it look gorgeous

6 years agoThanks Julie. I was going crazy trying to match different wood colors and undertones. I guess as long as they re not sitting next to each other , it's alright.
I love the industrial style console. I wish I could get it in the narrow hallway I have. That's another discussion thread. Attached is the photo. Max size I can get is 95*35.
Will see if I could get it constructed. My husband loves wood and doesn want marble tables with metal legs. I can only find marble console in the small sized hallway.
