Thank you all so much for the support, comments and info. The paint swatch is actually a very pale egg shell (the blue version, not the green). I agree with everyone that a warm undertone in the paint colour is necessary, I think it’s just my photography making it look stark. We’ll do a proper paint test once the build is underway. Thx for the encouragement re colour MB Design. It’s actually quite daunting as everyone else is choosing white on white or from the grey scale. Lavender is a very brave choice but, well done, I imagine it’s spectacular. The splash back is still a work in progress, either a very simple textured tile/pressed tin/glass the same colour as the stone benchtop (not stone, sorry I wasn’t clear about that MB) or, maybe a smidgen darker than the paint, but not textured. Might be a last minute decision depending on overall look once underway. Again, thank you for this and every other time I’ve called for help.

Thanks everyone so far. Only hesitation with glass (or a white-grey tinted glass) is that it might be a bit glarey with the spotlights above, but will definitely consider it! Cheers Annb, my father built the whole room including the cabinet :). The cd shelves are from IKEA. The metal strips you see are just over-door clothes hooks you can pick up for around $10ea. They just slide on top of any old door and are not bolted on in any way. We are going to install a rail inside to convert this to more of a wardrobe. The room dimensions are actually 3.8 x 3.7, but the width of the wall pictured is more around 2.7 because of the cabinet & bricks. Behind the curtain is a double sliding door with windows and optional external access. Same on opposite wall (which is more important to access.. and has nice views, hence the current, slightly awkward bed placement..) The pocket door is to what will be an ensuite. Main internal access is opposite, or external through the sliding door (marked with arrows in the second pic). The mezzanine is 1.4 wide, with sloping ceiling overhead. Could technically fit that king single up there, just, but the bed will probably be upgraded to a double bed soon enough. It's just storage on the mezzanine for now, but brainstorming... thought it could be used as a reading retreat or put that bed up there for guests once the double bed (thinking IKEA's Malm with the under-bed storage drawers). Just one young adult (20s) using the room. Between the wardrobe, drawers, sideboard and mezzanine there is plenty enough storage space. Drawers and sideboard will stay as is, but we are hoping to use this side of the room more wisely! A bit of a quirky space to get right! Thanks for your help everyone :) :).

Wall-mounted AC units have a directional outlet on them, so you'll be able to set it to push air across the room. 7.5 metres is a long way for it to travel though, probably won't go that far. The fans are not that powerful. As for the output size, the rule of thumb for these things is 100W per square metre, so 5kW is about right. With 7kW you should be okay. However your desk is right by a north-facing window so that's where the sun will come in and cook you, unless there's some shading. The suggestion for a fan is a valid one, and will probably make a big difference. I'm not sure is position 2 would really be a lot better since it's directed at the stair void anyway. Thermal comfort is always a tricky one since it's very subjective. Ultimately you'll just have to try it and see whether you feel too hot or cold. But overall I think it won't make too much difference which of the two locations the AC unit is in.

Just at a glance , if you lower the floor joists ( which would be a big and expensive job in itself ) the downstairs would be too low ? I don't know the rules , nor how big your place is , but you may have to take out the stairs and not use upstairs ; or put walls or cupboards along the side walls to get to the 60% 'rule' ; maybe use it only as an office ? Another option may be to put wheels on your house , and claim it is a tiny house -- don't laugh , often councils are that tied up in their own rules they will have to allow it , as it will completely confuse them !
