Help pls - powder room mirror

Which shape mirror should I go with above my powder room vanity?

Square? Rectangle? Round?

The mirror we had installed looks odd to me- the way it buts up against the bottom of window and extends beyond the window to the right.

I have mocked up some alternatives. Pls see pics. I also wonder what a large round mirror would look like?

Pls tell me what you think would work best. Modern home. Thanks!!

round mirror is the best choice as it doesn't compete with all the straight lines in every direction but the mirror should be hung high enough to avoid splashes ...bottom of the mirror about 20cm above the counter and top of the mirror about 10cms below the window frame (or similar proportions to suit the available space and the size of the mirror)

I'd show the builders your preferred design. Then ask them what is the extra cost's needed for tiles, lighting, removing the mirror and installing the stand alone one, etc. Definitely extra tiles needed though. I wouldn't add a plant or anything I'd chase up the mirror you really want. The top powder room look great doesn't it. Simple but classy.

I would suggest hanging a large moroccan woven fabric or mat, just use a length of dowel along the top edge, and hang it up. It would add great texture and also a casual feel to the room. Dress up the couch with a bunch of patterned cushions and a bolster moroccan style. Oh, forgot to add...........If you painted / wallpapered then put clear glass on top, if adhered/glued, there is no guarantee the glass will come off in one piece. However I have a friend who wallpapered, then put clear glass that was fixed on the corners with bolts (can't think of the word), so that it was removable. You can probably get a tiled look paper. Each to their own. I'd stick with a painted glass splashback.

I have struggled with these same questions. i have asked for advice from tradespeople, tile sellers, researched many bathrooms by designers and have come to the conclusion that it is ultimately what you personally will be happy with, unless you intend to sell your place in next 5 years. I am told that tiles are the most expensive thing to change if you wish to change the look but tap fittings etc is easy. I think as Kate said, you want to keep something in common across all bathrooms . I have seen one bathroom design change the terrazzo colour from one bathroom to another. If you have the space, accessories can also provide links to the bathrooms... eg towels, Knick knacks, lights etc

Some soft organic lines would work wonders in here. Go for the circle. We got a great hanging mirror for our powder room from Blu Dot. We got the pear shape....check them out too, but they may be a bit small for the space.
Personally I also love the Flynn mirror from Banyan Tree Furniture here in Melbourne. The black frame of this would look great in your space.

Hi there!

if you were going to stick with the rectangular lines, i would go with your mock up #3. That being said, it is such a linear room that i would love to see it softened with a round mirror. My only concern is that i'm not sure you have enough height to have a round mirror of the right proportions given the window. If your round mirror is too small, it may look out of place.

I agree round mirror would work well in this situation in a corner under the window. The straight edges of a square mirror would not work in with the lines from the window or vanity. You still get practical use from a round mirror and it add another dimension to the room. would like to see the final Bathroom photo. regards Laurie

Thank you everyone so far for confirming what I was thinking. I do also have a round glass pendant that will hang above the vanity, to the right. I may also get a funky round mat to place on the floor and some Muuto dots (black, timber or Matt chrome?) instead of linear towel rails. I love the Flynn mirror and will definitely look into that option and I do agree that I need to get the proportions of the mirror right, given the window above. Thanks to all!

Good choice of mirror (round w/thin black frame). You might cut out a piece of paper in desired shape and sizes, tape it to tiles over basin, and judge which size works best proportionately. I think the towel dots would look really good in black finish. The round silver pendant is beautiful.

Another option, IF you want to introduce warm elements to the room, you could see how a thin timber-framed round mirror and the timber towel dots might look, as you could also have a shallow-ish woven basket under the vanity to hold any supplies and a small hemp mat in front of vanity. Your bathroom could go either way quite nicely.

love your polished concrete...is the aggregate black?

My concern with going rectangle, while consistent with the horizontal lines of the window and vanity, is that the mirror will extend beyond the right side of the window and may look odd. Also, I think the proportions of the tile space available above the vanity and the width of the vanity will mean that the mirror will not be properly rectangle, but more square-rectangle. We can’t come too low below the window as we need to be able to see our reflections (tall males in family) and going too high above the vanity to achieve a proper rectangle will mean the mirror might be too narrow. Does this make sense? Ahh, decisions!!

Thanks girlguides. The round mirror I can fit is 800mm diameter. So it is quite large. I could also fit a 1000mm round mirror but the bottom of the circle will be slightly hidden behind the basin/tap. Thinking visually the 800mm will work better. Will purchase both tomorrow and see how they look in the space.

round shape is ideal, look forward to seeing the bigger option but i think the bare wall all around this one looks better

800mm looks good. Have you double checked that you have enough width for the larger size? The photo makes it appear as though it would be a very tight fit, or do you need it to be larger to cover the tiles where the previous mirror was attached

I have purchased the 1000mm mirror and will be checking it out tomorrow. There is def room sideways as the vanity is 1150 wide. The question is how it will look top to bottom. The top of the mirror (the highest point of the circle) will sit just under the window frame and the bottom/lowest point will sit approx 2cms below the vessel basin. So not sure how it will look hence purchasing both mirrors to compare. For some reason I think the 800 is slightly too small but the 1000 might also be wrong. I will post tomorrow! Thanks to everyone for your help. My hubbie removed the previous custom sized mirror which was siliconed to the wall and thankfully there is no damage to the tiles.

I think the 800 could be positioned a little bit closer to window. Best way to tell is if the tallest person stands in front of it and positions it accordingly.

800mm a tiny bit higher will be perfect, congratulations, excellent choice...now find another place for the bigger mirror so it doesn't have to be returned...

Thanks to everyone. We are happy with the 800mm. A better photo without the bubble wrap attached..... it will be hung higher than in the pic. The hanging glass pendant will fill some of the negative space to the right of the mirror. I agree, the 1000mm was too crowded and too heavy. Thanks again to all. You have been very very helpful!!

Although a round mirror might be a great artist/attractive choice looking at lighting in your bathroom mirror with lighting would be a better choice if you search Houzz for bathroom mirror with light their were some great designs Pendant would not help when do makeup or beauty routine You wouldn’t need those other accessories to make it fit in - more money for something elde

Thanks for your comments Susan. The room is a powder room so will not be used frequently. It has 2 very strong downlights. We have 2 bathrooms upstairs with great lighting directly above the vanity basins. The pendant is decorative. We also have LED strip lighting under the vanity (also decorative). Probably not as functional but will certainly look good!
