Interior Design Style Advice

We are undertaking a massive renovation, pretty well gutting our entire house and extending and starting over. In a muddle over the main open living area design style. It is a large area with kitchen, dining and living area and a large opening that makes the kids study/activity area visible as well. Also have a large butlers pantry. Considering a mix of modern country/Hamptons style. We have a black oven and a black range hood already purchased (fell in love with it and got it at an awesome price). Now tossing up as to what colour bench top, what colour sink, what colour dishwasher and fridge (although could integrate the dishwasher). Do we have down lights or light fixtures that could date in time, but that we could replace in time? I love a black and white look, but what if the blacks are not the same ie black glossy oven, black glossy fridge and then a stone look black sink? Will it look silly? No idea where to go with all of this.

For a Reno of that size I’d get a pro in. You can use the pro section of Houzz to search near you. You’ll get lots of advice here but you need to have a starting point. Have you started lookbooks here or pinboards on Pintrest. Both help narrow looks so then you can see your themes.

Start by searching black and white kitchens here on Houzz and see if anything looks good to you.

hi we have about six months ago now, re done our bath room , similar size to yours, and , i can take some photos and email them to you , we have maximised space, and walls , put in a white stone bath under the window , it is a metre in width , with a cool water spout coming off the centre under the window we pu t afalse ledge in to sit , candles etc on , , we tiles floor to ceiling, off white , wall mirror cabnit with three mirrors , inset into the wall so its only sits out a we bit from the wall tiles , floating bath room vanity , so that it makes the floor space look bigger , . matching stone square basin sits ontop of the vanity to one side so plenty of room to sit all your bath room stuff when need be , seperate shower all tiled as well , with inset , shelves for shampoo etc, also , when you open the bath room door and walk in when you close the bath room door behind it next to the shower is a very narrow floor to ceiling shelvec for towels, now the hole is there we jaust havent got the shelves put in yet. , we gt loads of comments as the bth room dosent look small evn though it is , , most expensive item the sqwat extra wide stone bath , made to order basin / tap ware and shower spray thing ,oh and the white stone vanity which we had made to order as well , due to the sizing .

Hi there, Without seeing the entire layout, it is hard to recommend what to do. Here are some ideas which could help! - wall mount tv with swivel arm and tilt to allow a better angle with out ruining the symmetry it creates above the fireplace. -cables can be cover with conduit -curtains can stay but extended to reach the fire place to create the illusion of a larger space. -foxtel (or dvd unit etc) can then be tucked behind curtains where extended curtain is vertically the save space and remove clutter i just finished a project where i did something similar. i will try and take a photo as an example. lavada

Hi Luke Perhaps we could offer another viewpoint? Paul is right in that the professionals here have both experience and qualifications behind their comments and outlook. That doesn't mean only pro's can offer an opinion, however it does mean that the DIY homeowners aren't always aware of regulatory, structural or spatial reasons behind the way Pro's do things. Most of the DIY'er's here understand this and by and large the interaction between the Pro's and homeowners is respectful and educational to all. There will always be someone who becomes offended or catty about something but then that is just life.... That said, I can see Pauls point made across many posts. Some of the designs offered up by the DIY'ers are amazingly talented whilst others are amateur. Again, this is not life and death, however the issue appears to be the gradual 'us and them' attitude becoming prevalent in this forum. This is only an anonymous forum for the amateur DIY'er. The Pro's have their company names and reputations out there and give of their time and advice freely. As Paul says, it is what the forum needs in order to attract DIY'ers or people looking for advice. It is worth pointing out that there have been some BLATANTLY illegal things offered up here by DIY'ers as ways of going about works. Whilst that is a rarity, the fact remains that the Pro's have an understanding of the regulatory requirements and put more than our opinions on the line when working in this industry. There will always be dodgy tradies, just as there are many homeowners not paying their bills, gaming the system, performing illegal (and dangerous) works etc Paul consistently stands up for his industry and beliefs as a Pro. Some of the DIY'ers here would do well to consider that you don't gain the qualifications without time and hard work out in the real world. Whilst we respect everyone's right to contribute, respect is a two way street. Cheers

It sounds like a big and expensive project, but nobody can give you the right answer with so little information. Perhaps you should consider engaging a design professional to help you. You have about a million decisions to make ahead of you, and it can be exhausting doing all the research for each decision. The correct design professional can pull it all together fairly quickly after visiting your home and taking a brief, and you can be sure that the whole lot will be co-ordinated and complementary.

My only suggestion from the information that you have supplied is to consider the new work to be in sympathy with the existing house (don't put a Hamptons style kitchen in a mid-century home), don't follow the latest fashion as it will date quickly, allow for lead times for tiles, and pay a lot of attention to your lighting.

There are lots of suitably qualified professionals on Houzz so make direct enquiries to a few locals, and go with your gut feeling,

Hello dear,

Nice information about the best interior design tips. Any interior designer can create a specific atmosphere just by putting together several pieces and unifying them in a single theme. There are interior designers who have a bias for certain motifs like eclectic, modern or even country style. Some go for simple designs without the clutter. Interior design is not only aesthetic but also functional depending on the requirements of the client. An interior designer can make a small room spacious and an otherwise cluttered room into an orderly one. Interior design is used just about anywhere from homes, offices to commercial buildings. The interiors of a room should always match the personality of the person who will occupy that room. This is the reason why designers always work closely with their clients so they can make sure that they get a feel for what their clients want in terms of design style.
