Designing one room at a time.
Comments (271)Hi Leecy, lovely to hear from you and hearty congratulations. No wonder you have been quiet. What a fun time ahead and I'm sure your new addition is going to thoroughly enjoy the attention of his 3 mothers. I can imagine the wonderful feeling of moving into a home that needs no work. It is fun to plan and do the renovations, but there just comes a time in life that freedom is so much more important, especially with babies - you just never get that time back. How far did you get with the renovations? Did you get the kitchen area done at all?? I put my new kitchen in last October while BH was overseas and I had it all to myself, MY decisions MY wants, MY needs. I didn't let on to anyone I was doing it so BH came home to a huge surprise and loved everything - I'm sure mostly because he didn't have to think about it. Everything is in drawers or on pull out shelving so no bending or crawling around the floor, except in the pantry which has all narrow adjustable shelving so the low shelves just have one large item on them making it easy to grab and nothing has to be searched for. All the joeys have been here since then for holidays and it got very high scores of approval. The only problem we have is trying to find things, with cleaning out, there are no hiding places left. Given us lots of laughs at least. Good luck with everything, and don't be a stranger. Sneak peek at part of the kitchen...See More1st time building
Comments (21)Doors: Front door - there is nowhere near your front door to put stuff. Can you eke out a narrow cupboard into the gyprock cavity of the garage - for umbrellas, shoes, keys etc Master bedroom - not sure why you would have a double door to the master bedroom (Unless it is to get a humongous bed in, due to the narrow hall?) If so, consider putting the kitten door closer to the front door - I expect the majority of movement would be to/from closet and to from kitchen? You don't want to walk out of the closet and get a door in the nose. Master bedroom - you have a mix of pocket sliding and opening doors. Can they both be pocket sliding - to give you more room in the closet. (Both doors would then slide into their pockets towards the west) Make sure that the electrical switches for the Bathroom are on the Eastern side of the doorway, (if you move the door to the other side) to avoid the door hitting them. (I am assuming that the plumbing for the ensuite shower is on the South Wall, common to the laundry. If not - it should be to save $$$) Fridge door - with the fridge in that location, every time the fridge is opened, the passage to the kitchen is blocked (Maybe? I can't scale very well. If it isn't blocked then you would be doing the lambada with whoever is at the fridge) Bathroom and toilet - 720 doors won't allow someone with a walking frame to easily access. I would put the same 820 doors you have everywhere else. Toilet 1100 wide with a sink seems narrow to me. Get yourself some masking tape and lay out the toilet walls and showing the door opening (with a bit extra for your door furniture. Check that you can actually navigate between the door handle, the sink and the toilet. Hallway: 1200 wide hall won't allow you to put anything other than the slimmest of pictures on the walls. You could sneak some space back from the Eastern side, if you could live with narrower bedrooms. (remembering to leave circulation space around the beds, which with the window orientation have to go north/south)....See MoreTime for the vase to go ... what else can I put in the recessed wall?
Comments (84)Absolutely agree with blueskies60 ! Remove the artwork/bench/plant that's on the left and replace then with either a bookshelf or a tall chest of drawers. Perhaps the plant can be repositioned into the corner on the floor where this troublesome niche is (there seems to be more than enough light there for a plant) and just place something calm and simple in the niche itself - perhaps a Japanese style scroll or pen and ink art work set off with a more rounded object sitting in the left corner of the niche; a gorgeous rock, a lovely candle, a calming statue... If you have (my preference) a chest of timber drawers on the left where the current art work is, you'll break up the symmetry, have more storage and have another surface upon which you can place a changing display of objects. This is the area that I would utilise for a mirror....See MoreWhat finish on coffee table?
Comments (23)Hi, thanks all and apologies, all my mail went into the junk folder so I didn't see the comments. Yes I used the Annie Sloan chalk paint in graphite with black wax. As it was my first attempt I was very nervous. First I'd tried staining it with minwax polyshades - epic disaster! So I had to sand that down a bit as it was quite glossy and the Annie Sloan didn't stick. Anyway the lady in the shop Said to put clear wax on before the black wax which I did on the top but later I forgot and did black first by mistake and actually preferred that - so you can really muck around with it. I'm so pleased you all like it, my mother was very unimpressed and said she preferred it as it was but oh well, we like it. The paint is a cinch but the waxing takes quite a bit of elbow grease and not a small amount of lint-free rags (especially with black wax) and is quite expensive. Bill attached. Brush I will use again but used all the paint and almost all the wax. Still - Much cheaper than something new. I'm a bit nervous about tackling the large coffee table but I figure I can always sand it down again. The other option is a dark brown/black rub on stain called Java by General Finishes which I can get from the US by Amazon. It says it's the closest to the ikea brown/black Colour what ch could be good. I have another side table so I might try it on that one for a different room and then decide which looks best... Decisions decisions! May end up doing my awful but comfy walnut bed suite in the French Linen chalk pain half strength. I just hate it so much - it's so heavy and dated. Then I can add some nice pictures and make the room 'something'. Thanks for all the compliments - made my day!!...See MoreTeak Me Home
