Coffered ceiling help!

Hello all! We are having a house built (Nebraska). In the model home - the open concept living area has a coffered ceiling that drops down 6" (ceiling height is 9ft) and looks like this:

Our home only has the foundation in as of now and the home won't be done until later this summer. We were contacted last week to let us know that there had been a change in how they were building our floor-plan and that the coffered ceilings will now be 12" (versus the 6" we thought we were getting). We were able to check out a different home currently being built with the 12" coffered ceilings and my wife hates it! I'm 50/50 on it...but leaning towards a NO WAY myself. Here is what it looks like: (please ignore my drama queen daughter!)

Any feedback or thoughts for us? Is dropping down 6" to make it 1ft just too much for a room with 9ft ceilings?

We will have a meeting with the builder in the next few weeks to go over our options...but it's not looking good on the 6" and I don't think they will care too much if we walk away from the deal/contract. Thank you all!

Funny how your query has popped up on the Australian version of Houzz, as we are along way from Nebraska. I would want an explanation from the builder why the coffered ceiling needs to drop so far as they look very heavy and oppressive.

Probably the sort of detail I might use in a multi-story carpark. Are the dropped sections concealing plumbing from upstairs? Could he build it without any coffers? If there is a choice between 12inch coffers or no coffers I would go with a flat ceiling.

A new home is a lot of money and you need to get it right so I would say 6 inch coffers as displayed in the model home, or walk away. See if he changes his tune...

I love a coffered ceiling but the 12 inches just seems too much on that height ceiling. And it’s something you’ll see everyday so if it annoys you, it’s going to bother you all the time. PS. Love the drama daughter all the way from Australia, we have those here too!

Good morning! I love love love your ceiling! As others have asked - is it something that repeats through the house? I would 100% keep them - the key is to work with them not fight against them. I would also replace the light fitting - look at having recess lights installed. There are a number of things that you can do when you have such a prominent feature such as this in a room - you either choose to work with it and 'calm' it down into the space - such as painting the ceiling and the walls in the same colour - or you say - to hell with it and make it the hero of the room. I have seen some stunning ceilings where the walls have been painted in a 'white' and the ceiling painted in a strong colour such as navy which then ties into accents in the room. It would obviously depend on your personal style. Good luck!

Wonderful ideas, everyone, thank you. I'm loving that Orion! Not sold on the brass, however, but if I can find something similar in nickle or such, that light would be a great statement somewhere in the new rooms. If there's one decorative aspect my wife and I agree on, it's that we do not like gold/brass fixtures. my suggestion would be to keep the new kitchen in proportion to the size and scale of the whole house so i prefer option 2 with cabinets only as high as the top of the window, tall narrow fridge (less than 80cm wide) next to the back door with wall mounted mw and wall cabinets all round, no tall cabinets, more counter on the fridge wall then stove, sink and dw along the window wall to make sure that there is counter on either side of the stove and sink and locations for a toaster, kettle and other appliances..but exact location of appliances depends on budget and sizes of all the cabinets you want to use.. but, if you plan to remove gas in future, why not start with electric appliances and best insulation ready to add solar power at a future date? ...eg check out the electric air sourced hot water heaters and consider an electric flame heater for the kitchen fireplace and save the gas heater for the hew rear living area although it may be possible to have one heater with hot air connected to the other rooms with an in roof ducting system and, if you have long term plans to alter the rear lean-to research options for renovating the whole house and then plan all the work in stages...eg i would have the new laundry/bathroom next to the refurbished bedroom (master suite?) and have the future new rear living area with the north aspect

It's about balance, between function and aesthetics. Fenestration configuration is often poorly implemented and it can be a "make or break" factor in the project outcome if you're not careful, so good to see that you're thinking about this You want to take cues from the original building style, but you can also nudge it into more contemporary territory successfully if you achieve the right balance. You can always manage/control privacy and sunlight with window furnishings. The most important things are (a) that the window proportions are balanced in the facade, and (b) they are serving the functionality of ventilation & light. On a front facade I'd never design two separate windows side by side that are slightly different, one fixed and one awning - it will look off balance. You'd be better off with two awnings, or one large window with sections of both awning and fixed, say two smaller outside awning/openable with a centralised fixed section. If you do some research in the era/style of the existing home, you'll find that the front facade windows divisions within the one window frame typically were slightly varied. Your picture has them all even that makes it look more standardised.

Thank you both. Your comments/thoughts are right in-line with what we are thinking and what we plan on doing. We'll see what they can do when we attend the meeting. They already know that we are considering walking...

Mmm...I too think the deeper coffered ceiling looks out of proportion and overwhelms the room. I don't understand why they would change the proportion and usually what is written in a contract holds water. They cannot just change that willy nilly. Please let us know what happens at meeting...am most curious! Cheers!
