Half way to Christmas!!! Woo Woo. Anyone started thinking about it yet?

It wasn't cold.... just really really wet. At some point, you're just as wet as you're going to get so you may as well continue as long as you're not cold.

But now that I'm home and out of my wet raingear (thank the universe for GORTEX) I am chilled. So... yes. Hot shower and a coffee with Bailey's is in order, I believe.

No, not yet. We filled a 10x30 storage unit completely with stuff stacked all the way up to the 10 foot ceiling And, the garage still has all his tools and a late 70s motorcycle which I am absolutely not taking responsibility for! Weather this time of year is unpredictable; Sunday was an ice storm so we ended up just closing up mid afternoon. Monday was decent and today was really warm - 16C - low 60sF - and then the rain absolutely poured down so we had to stop mid afternoon again. Tomorrow is supposed to be rain in the morning, changing to snow and getting colder by afternoon but the furniture and tools absolutely must get moved anyway as Thursday is supposed to be even colder. My patience is almost completely worn through. Today I concentrated on getting the stuff I had no use for out of the house and garage. The other stuff either he can take with him or not, but I'm feeling that he's taking advantage of the situation by not doing a reasonable amount of effort. He's running out of storage space so he's trying to cherry-pick the good stuff and leave all the junk behind...nope, that wasn't the deal! We agreed to help him move, not do it for him. Then, it took me 25 minutes with the blasted automated assistant for the electric company then finally had to go to a live agent and start over and once again provide all the information already entered with the keypad. And, we aren't done yet as we have a choice of service providers so we have to call them too Ridiculous. I just keep reminding myself that it's a nice house at a nice price, even after I have to pay everything to get him out

Astraea, from what I have read, it seems the force of that tornado leaves nothing unscathed. Kutchie mentioned silos made from concrete 16 ins thick being reduced to rubble - how thick would walls need to be!!! If they can dig a whole in the ground 6ft deep that is a long way down for a basement to be. One would think though NASA could come up with something - spaceships have to withstand huge forces. I was so relieved to hear tonight that the death toll is nowhere near as high as first thought, in fact only a third. Of course one death is tragic and the poor little kids who drowned was horrible. Unfortunately, the mob next door are exempt from zoning laws, they have special protection as part of the Govt's cost cutting methods. Instead of having facilities for serious mentally disabled people they lease homes and, in this case, put 5 of them into the home with full time live-in carers. This is the first time the owners have ever trimmed the trees, despite my constant requests for them to do so. We even had to chop one back that is on the street front as the postman couldn't get to our letter box. This time they have taken the top off them although it is still not necessary for them to be so high, but they did have the power lines running through them which was the biggest concern. I have been going to complain to the Council about them a few times but there is not a lot they can do, I would have to go to some mediation board that has been set up for this sort of thing but it is too far away. The main issue I have is that if any work is done on them, it all has to be done from my side which means they are clomping over my garden and I get the mess, but if I stop them, which I do have the right to do, then I have to put up with the trees right over my side garden and driveway. Legally, they should come to my door and ask permission to enter my property but of course workmen never do. I'm actually wondering if the Charity that runs the home may have organised it as they pruned every tree and shrub on the property, but it is the first time it has been done in about 20 years, so at this rate I may never see them again.

mforr - It's funny you should mention that, because I just looked at the map of queens, trying to remember the name of the highway that went thru a friend's neighborhood like that .. and I think they renamed it! There used to be an "Interboro Parkway", and now it's called the "Jackie Robinson Parkway"! Wikipedia says it was renamed in 1997 .. who knew?! I'm glad I can say this now, but I can't believe you were looking at that Homesense rug - it is horrible, you definitely have far better taste than that. Have you looked into the cost of getting rugs cut down? Costs a bomb here. Angela, congrats on your Scholarship money, you deserve it with all the time you devote and your dedication. Bit worried now I may have confused you more with your tiles. You know your room and what you want to achieve so go with your heart. Robin - don't work too hard, stay safe. One day you and kd are going to fall over each other .......... literally.

EZ, things I've found helpful when setting up a buffet type lunch are - wrap the silverware in a napkin and tie with a pretty ribbon. Put the silverware at the end of the buffet, not the beginning, this way there's less to balance when filling your plate with food. If your buffet table is wide enough AND you can access both sides, stagger the dishes so people have to fill their plates from two sides and that way there's no traffic jam. Drinks shouldn't be part of the buffet table because after all, we only have two hands, right? Cold dishes should be first in the buffet; if you put hot dishes first they'll cool off by the time you sit down.

Sigh

It's not deep... But it's the most water I've had down there since I moved here. I don't think a sump would have helped in this case as I think it came through some cracks. Just not sure where. I have the panelling stripped off but the studs and insulation are still up so I have to pull all the insulation down tonight and get the fans running.

Robin, was your home new to you in 2011 if so you might have coverage under the Alberta New Home Warranty program. If not, might be best to contact your insurance company. So sorry to hear this, It happened once to me and that was awful. If it came up the drain a ball trap would have certainly helped that out. Through cracks... repairs are a must. Be careful as you continue your landscaping, grading is key and often messed with unintentionally.

Yes there is a window well there with a broken window. I believe that's the source of the water. I have to pull the remaining carpet tonight and put it in the truck to take to the dump tomorrow.

I do know someone who has a place in the panhandle…not sure if it is Panama City. Will ask. When do you want it?

In 1967 I went to Pensacola FLA with some friends to visit a friend, Marine, who was based there and on his way to Vietnam. I hope that area has changed. Holy Cow..red dirt and we headed out in the car for a day trip and wound up in Pascagoula. We did have a lot of fun…I think we had fun…I was 23…I am SURE I had fun.

I love concrete countertops! So versatile!

I'm on a break from vacuuming up the water. I've had to empty the shopvac twice plus my daughter mopped up about 1.5 buckets. Considering we got 35mm of rain this afternoon, I suppose I'm not doing too bad. And my sewer didn't back up which is another bonus.

I think the yard is on hold until the rest of this stuff is sorted out.

I think between the window well and the broken window, it's a recipe for disaster. Doesn't help how we got deluged today. On the flip side, my step brother got evacuated from his flooded condo and he's not sure if they'll let him back in tonight. So I guess I'm relatively lucky.

Besides. I really wanted an excuse to get rid of the rest of the carpet. Now I have it :)

Old carpet is the WORST and old, wet carpet is even WORSER.

In my first condo, I pulled up the most awful, red shag carpet that had to be 20 years old. It was repulsive and the single most disgusting job I ever did. And it wasn't wet. (It was actually... crunchy. Gives me the heebyjeebies just thinking about it).

What I'm saying is... go have a shower!

Man, am I tired. I've been up since 4:45, golfed in the rain, came home and did some work, went to my Dad's for dinner and a visit with my 84 year old aunt (who has so much spunk!) and I am officially whipped.

Robin, you deserve an award, girl!! Instead of moaning and whining, you just get in there and do what needs to be done. I really admire you for everything you do--and you are always up to something! If I could, I would send you a large bottle of wine and some bath and bodyworks stuff in your favorite scent! And a 10 lb box of Russell stover chocolates!!
