Home Decorating Design Dilemma Before & After

Need help, but don't know what type of professional I should ask.

I'm having trouble finishing my lounge. I have an enormous wall with a pitched ceiling, don't know what to put there. I'm stuck for colours for rugs, I need artwork. I don't know which to choose first. I feel like I need help before I get something expensively wrong. Who do I look for? I don't know if I have enough work for an interior designer. I have it in my mind they do complete homes, am I wrong? or is there someone else I should be approaching for help? Thanks

Some interior designers prefer to be engaged to do a full home, and some are happy to be engaged for just a small job. Some will want to make your room in their own style, and some will work with the pieces that you have that are important to you.

If you have no idea where to start then don't commit to any large and expensive purchases until you have found the right interior designer to advise you. Don't engage one based on their portfolio of photos alone, but interview them to ensure that they are empathetic and understanding. A good interior designer will know where you can save money, will take the stress away, and you will end up with a beautiful space that reflects who you are.

I'm certain you will be able to hire an Interior Designer or an Interior Decorator to do a few hours (or whatever you need) consult with you to help with your specific Dilemna. It's very helpful that you know exactly what you need help with so you can make the most of the time you set. They charge by the hour and may have a minimum fee or number of hours. You can use Houzz to 'Find Professionals' in your area. Ring around as they will be more than happy to answer your initial questions. Best wishes!

definitely use a designer - they have a much better idea of what plants will work and why, which will save you a heap of money (I have replanted 8 times due to having a poor understanding of what to put where) and when it comes to draining, paving, irrigation etc they have experience of not only how, but which products will produce what results.... Plus a good designed area looks "done" (think display home gardens/features) however self-designed always look "bitza". If you don't have the money to do the entire plan that they design, ask them to break it into stages that you can execute/upgrade over time that still looks good in its most basic form.

In my early twenties I designed kitchens for my mother and two aunts (Uncle built them and they worked), but when it came to designing my own - had to fit a constrained space and no possibility of extension - I chewed my lips for ages - like Nicole, I drew and measured ad infinitum, and used graph book walls, views etc. I did one extra thing - which I think worked - I listed all that I wanted to store, and tried to analyse how I liked working in the kitchen. Some things I had to settle for because of space (such as a smaller dishwasher) but most of it has worked. We have a corner pantry, which I (and the cat, husband a bit larger) can walk into, but have not put small appliances in there - they sit in a large drawer beneath the main working bench, which also works well. It all looks good to me Nicole and thinking carefully about needs and how things work in advance usually results in something you'll be happy with. Good luck!

We have an even better match now. Took my sample of frame to another paint shop and they were brilliant! Kept working on the mix until it was right. And even better the lady was an interior decorator and advisor and gave me some great advice on colour choosing. Thinking of going quite a bit lighter for the walls and adding some pops of colour in verandah posts and/or fret work. Feeling so much better about the choices now. The samples on the cards are all the colours I originally had, we’ve just pulled in Haymes Overcast as the overall colour rather than Charcoal Grey. Will use the Charcoal in the features. Really excited to get weatherboards on and start painting!! It pays to shop around!!

You should be asking yourself, what do you like? Do you like contemporary or country, or white or wood or dark colours. If you know you like a particular style, then do a google or houzz search of kitchens in that style. At the moment your home is made up of various style, 1990 floor tiles, almost French provincial On the outside, a bit of terrace federation thrown in also. In other words, your home is not "a style" but a mixture of lots of styles. So you need to look at lots of photos of kitchens and dining/lounge rooms, and work out what is your style. Then start a fresh. If you stick with what you like, it will all come together. This is the same for the exterior.

Hi Brenny,

This is absolutely the work for an interior designer/decorator. Some designers do larger scale work, however like myself, we happily engage in all scales of work. I would definitely recommend either meeting face to face if they are local or speaking on the phone if they are remote as to get a feel for the designer before committing to them. Normally, after a discussion regarding the scope of works, they will provide you with a quote if they (and more importantly you) are happy to proceed.

Even more importantly, professionals know what they are doing, and (should) have a large array of suppliers to work with and good product knowledge. Some (like us at JFI Studios) also provide you with trade discounts from suppliers who offer it, so not only do they help you with what you need to find, but also can sometimes offer it at a cheaper rate which can go a long way.
