Need help on front exterior entry please!

Hi!

I am looking for ideas for my front door entryway. Can't decide whether to go a classy urn and a smaller plant, or have a plainer pot and make a statement with a tree. See attached photo of front of house... any ideas? Door is a dark blue so also wasn't sure whether to go cream or black? We only use the one door on the left so was thinking of something bigger to fill the space - there's quite a bit of room.

On saying that Jessica, you could go a large modern planter as you first suggested and a fab standard tree , could look gorgeous also, love your house

Hi Jessika,
Lovely house, I think a formal planter would look gorgeous, I would go black, any good nursery or pot centre should have a good range, source your plant from a big nursery like Warner’s, Plantmark and online, few ideas for you.

Could you put something in your loungeroom - something like a side table or hat stand - that creates a kind of vestibule? If you face the back of the lounge to the door, that can help create a separate space, too. (But you did say that you can't move your lounge) Please ignore this Christmas parts of photo!

I'm certainly no designer but if you already have a wall sconce either side of the mirror, then I would remove the lamp on the table and replace it with some other item like a nice piece of personal art, or vase and I do think a larger plant would look better on the ground as suggested by emwoodhouse. Would love to see other photo's of this entry to see if even a sitting area is a possibility. I think a rug could look nice too.

I found a website that might be quite helpful for you http://www.colourtouch.com.au/ to visualise what colours and finishes could look like on your house. You can choose a style of house that closely matches yours then choose a number of set schemes, or start with a blank canvas and play around with any colour / finish you like.

Thanks Julie, I do love the look of a formal planter - you don't think it conflicts with the hanging baskets? The flowers we had in them have died off a fair bit so was thinking to replace them with something else.

I don’t think they would conflict with a formal planter, your house reminds me of the beautiful houses in Europe, they had fab topiaries at the door and gorgeous hanging baskets above just like yours, you could do white pansies and trailing ivy or a pretty colour,or you could go a modern planter but not sure if it would compliment your house as well,

so many choices!! I think I'll go with a plainer pot and a fab tree - will fill out the space and is a bit different! Now just to find the products! The places you suggested seem to be wholesale places ...

Also, with the hanging baskets I love the idea of putting ivy in them. I love beautiful gardens and plants and flowers but don't have a lot of knowledge - the hanging baskets get direct sunlight and so very hot in summer and obviously don't retain much water. Will ivy survive in them?

Hi Jessika,
Ivy is the perfect choice for your hanging baskets, you could add pansies during the colder months and petunias mixed with the ivy in the summer, gorgeous, do you have any large garden centres near you, they will be able to advise a suitable tree, in Melbourne we have a great nursery called Gardenworld that has a fabulous range of plants and great advice , I am like you I love gorgeous gardens also, check out Paul Bangay and Peter Fudge for inspiration .

Add water crystals to the soil to retain moisture in between watering and use a potting mix with slow release fertiliser and they will look fabulous.

So helpful, thank you again! Bunnings is really all we have but I'll try them. I'm excited about the ivy idea and my hubby approves too :) Now I just need to find and decide on pot and plant!

If you have a Bunnings they deal with ‘Fleming’s’ nurseries, check out the website for Fleming’s, they have the best range of trees and ornamentals ever, choose one and Bunnings can order it in for you, I have done this myself and they are always beautiful.

put ivy in the hanging baskets today :) and have ordered and urn and then will decide on a tree! thanks for all your suggestions Julie, ivy was a fabulous idea! cant wait to see it grow and start hanging down.

Some great advice from Julie, consider adding a LARGE plain Coir mat as well.
