Comments (19)While you are saving up for a whole house paint job - 1. Work out the exterior colour-scheme. 2. Paint the pickets around the base is the house, yourselves, if possible. I agree that it should be a dark colour, that works with your chosen final scheme. 3. Prepare garden beds along the front, choose appropriate shrub species and plant ASAP, with possibly something taller sweeping up to the left (of the photo) to break the strong horizontal "box" look. If you decide to change the stairs at some stage, you may have to remove a plant or two, but at least there will be an inviting entrance growing happily in the meantime. Have fun :)...See MoreHelp. Comments (4)Hello, depending on the colour schemes you like. I suggest spraying the roof (probably charcoal colour) painting the gutters and fascists to match. Paint the bricks a light to medium colour. Windows and boards in white/light to contrast. As a neutral beige time selection I would recommend the following (without the fan deck in front on me). Roof, gutters & fascias - Colorbond Woodland Grey Bricks - darker then Dulux Beige Royal (Linseed is probably a little green but the right depth of colour) Windows & boards - Dulux Beige Royal half Keep the roof line as it is, the colour change will be amazing....See MoreNeed help with front street appeal
Comments (12)what a great house!! make sure all the paint and trim is in excellent condition, what about Colorbond Cove and/or Evening Haze for over the windows and roller door with bright white trim and a startling front door (turquoise?) is the flue being used? remove or clean and paint, move the tv aerial out of sight, remove or replace the awnings with better fitting blinds that fit inside the window frames (Sarlon roller blinds will be more discreet and reasonably priced) remove the old planting near the house and add a mowing strip along the walls, clean the concrete driveway and create a gravelled parking area instead of parking on the grass with just a triangle of generous plants between the drive and parking area, level the lawn closer to the house with a low curved retaining wall made of of railway sleepers and prune back the big shrubs to see the edges of the house, improve the lawn and add planting along the retaining wall or right down to the front fence...Dietes, Grasses, and other architectural plants will look good...See MoreHelp! Comments (14)I think the task of transforming homes like these is an exciting challenge! If your budget is not huge then timber trimmings and paint can make a huge difference here. You could paint the brick, or better still clad it with weatherboard to soften the house, but if the budget does not allow the whole house to be clad just do the front and go around the corners by about a meter and then paint the bricks at the sides and back to match. You definitely need a verandah across the front, with the steps centred and going straight down to meet the gate - this will transform the facade and is worth spending the money on. If you dont want to change the windows consider framing them with timber to make them look larger and replace the front door with something nicer, luckily your door is centred with same size windows either side. Id suggest replacing the fence with a picket fence and matching gates to hide the concrete driveway and then screen off the long side driveway and camouflage the overhang with a picket gate to match. Paint choices here are really important, it looks like your neighbours homes are beige or grey? Consider painting the house a classic colour such as dusky blue or sage combined with light trimmings to make yours stand out from the surrounding neutral homes (ive done a couple of quick mock-ups below as examples) You need some plants but your front yard is not large so a single, low height feature tree with mulch or pebbles instead of lawn would look wonderful plus a couple of strategically placed pots. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoI think landscaping will be the best thing you can do to unify this home. The very best thing you can do is bring in a landscape designer. Your local nursery probably has one, either on staff or knows of a few good contacts. Not the big box stores. Check the landscape forum here on Houzz too for ideas.
I have never seen a mansard roof with two different materials like your home: tile on top and shingle for the rest. I usually see the roof material as shingle, like below. Having said that, if you click on the 'more info' link in the second pic, you will see the portico roof is actually copper and the mansard is shingle.
