The short answer is yes, acrylic baths do need extra support. Specially when you think about the weight of a person plus all that water.
I am a fan of enameled steel baths, they look good for longer and the thing most people are not aware of is that steel baths hold the water temperature better. Enamel baths let the water cool down really fast your bath goes cold.
So for me its always steel or stone if you can afford it.
