1940s Red Brick Cottage External Air Vents

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with the external air vents towards the roof of a 1940s red brick cottage. As they are no longer required to vent unflued gases from open fires and gas heaters they were creating a draft - not so great in Canberra's winter! A temporary fix has been to fill them with foam then place a metal brown (to blend in with the brick colour) tin plate (no holds). While this has solved the draft problem it looks ugly. I'm looking for a more sympathetic design idea. The gutters are in momument and the windows (when they are replaced) will be also.
