POLL: Open-plan or closed layout?
Comments (14)yes it's interesting how the Brits like closed off rooms. I watch those UK home shows & thy seem to all says "don't want cooking smells" but don't they have good extraction fan rangehoods there like we do? I've also wondered why they don't have/ install proper air conditioning there that warms, cools & filters the air? Wonder if now their summers are getting hotter if they'll embrace it. I certainly thing you can have the best of both worlds in the right house, open kitchen dining living & then maybe a seperate living or reception room as they call them in the UK. Also if you have nice big bedrooms & master suite you can escape there for peace & quet. Interesting the differences between countries....See MoreWhat's your best advice for someone renovating their kitchen?
Comments (25)prioritise what does and doesn't work for you in your old kitchens, decide what equipment is essential for you and how much space it needs and cull everything else, don't waste money and space storing things you don't need, make sure there's a dedicated convenient spot for garbage bins, dust pan and broom and storage of food scraps, consider shallow in wall storage perfect for cans, jars, bottles and packets. Group supplies and equipment according to expected use eg enough cups and glasses for the occupants and regular visitors near the sink and kettle, everyday dinner plates stored near the stove and extras stored elsewhere. Even with very careful planning and very specific written instructions my kitchen cabinet maker put the cook top in the wrong place and 3 m of counter had to be replaced so don't assume the cabinetmaker agrees with you and have your plans scrutinised by HOUZZ to ensure that you consider all the best options for your new kitchen!!...See MorePOLL: Would you rather a freestanding kitchen bin or under-sink bin?
Comments (15)Under sink bin added when we moved to our home 18 years ago as there was not a lot of floor room. Opening door was awkward. However now with an updated kitchen it was suggested to have pull out bin in island bench. Chop food on bench then scraps into bins. Too easy. It is practical, more room to move around work zones with re configuration. If you empty regularly it is not a problem with odour and part of the integrated design. Its clever cabinetry....See MoreWhat's the best layout for an ensuite and robe?
Comments (13)highly recommend for your new build that you engage a professional to design your home. Don't try and DIY thinking you'll save money - false economy on so many levels.... Home design should be developed from the inside out, walls & windows LAST, internal function including understanding of furniture and fit-out detail, not to mention negotiation of various context constraints, topography and regulations and responding to orientation/outlooks/sustainability etc.......not to mention all within the overriding project controller which is budget. In resolving areas of master bedroom you need to be working with furniture on the plan and rather thinking about size of the room, work from the size and proportion of the components/fittings in it , as well as considering flow and outlook in order to then define the space(s) Best of luck PD :) www.pauldistefanodesign.com...See Morelydia1144
