New Off Grid Rural Solar Passive Design for Wide Bay
Comments (69)we're building in Childers Qld (Zone 2) on top of a hill 120m above sea level with no chance of being built-in as we are on a 69 acre block. Quite windy all the time predominately from the SE. All outside doors will be security. Roof has vents in the gables on all four sides so I can leave open to purge heat during summer and close off in winter. Bed 2&3 doors used to be adjacent bathroom door for cross breezes but a layout change in the bathroom meant having its door on the east now. Not ideal but necessary. Dark colour unfortunately is dictated by our very red soil that will stain any light colour so had to go dark, would of preferred light. So I should make my eaves 1200mm all around?...See MoreClerestory windows
Comments (4)if you mean windows on an outside wall above the kitchen cabinets they're no more expensive than any other windows..we chose awnings with electric openers (extra $350 but too high to climb up and we do open and close regularly during the day) The high window exhausts hot air and creates a nice cool breeze, lovely light in the room all day and complete privacy..the rangehood pipe can go out the wall under the window or up through the ceiling in front of the window but we chose a recycling system because you need to plan exactly where the rangehood will go BEFORE the windows are installed!!!... our windows don't get especially dirty but they're only two years old and too high to see close up if your windows will be facing north make sure that you have a deep eave and there should be no problem with overheating...ours face east and can't be shaded in the early morning on a hot day unless we install outside blinds...See MoreDesign for solar passive
Comments (20)Worth consulting with a Permaculture designer as well at this stage, if you want to maximise the productivity of your site for a sustainable future. Catching and retaining heat from walls is ideal for growing fruit trees and vegies that thrive in warmer climates and need frost protection. Also catching and retaining water on site and using any slopes to your advantage, to minimise the need to water your garden, with slowing how water moves along your site is also vital. Creating a view if you don't have one, is equally important. Do you want raised vegetable beds for ease of work and watering. Wicking beds are ideal for this. Vegie patches and herbs are best located close to your kitchen. The time to plan all those elements of sustainability is now! Habitat for local bird species and beneifical insects is also worth considering, now, rather than when your house is built. Are you considering keeping chickens as part of your sustainable living schemes. If so the best designs for chicken runs, now tends to be a narrow enclosure that runs along your fencelines and can be planted out with fruiting trees. I am actually a Permaculture designer, but I suggest seeking one out locally, who is familiar with your climate and can help you create microclimates ideal for specific plant demands. Even if you didn't use your previous garden, have you considered why not? In an ideal world, outdoor space and greenery helps our spirits soar. Growing your own food saves on food miles and contributes so much to a more sustainable world and offers the freshes, tastiest organic produce too!...See MoreNo windows in living room
Comments (29)Hey dreamer and Kate, Great sketch 👌🏽 but unfortunately cannot make any more significant changes, we are signing the HIA contract tomorrow or we miss out on the grant money and will have to start again next year with 30,000 less. We can only put in a window where the fridge is now (for free!) and put the fridge in the pantry. The opening to the pantry is 1.4 metres so it’s not tiny at least. We need to decide by tomorrow at latest. I do think it would be quite symmetrical to have a floor to ceiling window on each side of the bench and the pantry in the cupboard doesn’t really bother me but most people I have talked to seem to think it’s strange 🤷♀️...See Moreoklouise
