Advice / Thoughts on floor rugs under dining table and lounge room In open plan - Kitchen/Dining/Lounge

Should the Rug be similar colour/pattern/texture to the sofas ?
What other furnishings / art/ side & coffee tables should be considered in the choice ?

As you already have existing sofas, most definitely use the sofa upholstery as a clue to the design and colour of the rugs. You also need to take into account the colour of the flooring- floorboards, tiles ... ? Without seeing images of the furniture and flooring, it is impossible to be more specific.

As the dining and lounge are in an open-plan space, the two rugs should relate to one another. Bear in mind, a rug under a dining table must be large enough so dining chairs can be pulled out without catching the edge of the rug, which would be irritating to diners.

I suggest you resolve the rugs first, then address the room acessories: art, side and coffee tables etc. Big things first, then everything else should fall into place.

Hi Lucy! If you're trying to match your sofa to a rug, you may want to consider a custom made rug - it allows you to match colours exactly rather than hunting around for the perfect shade. Not to mention it gives you a lot more control over the colour and style direction of your space, and its quite a fun and creative process :)

in that case you could stick to the same pattern because it ties in nicely with the existing decor, but any pastel colour would work, maybe a light blue to tie in with the wall or even a pale purple like the attached photo, but perhaps a more paired back pattern like in the first photo I linked. That pattern on rugs at the moment is quite trendy and popping up quite often so I doubt it will be too hard to find what you're looking for :)

Check out some of the plastic type outdoor ones. Nothing like the old days. These are modern and colourful and a little bit spongy underfoot which is really comfortable.

The room looks lovely. The rug is too light in fabric weight - it could be dangerous if someone caught their toe under it. And as mentioned by others - you need some colour. I know that it is advised by some people that a mat should go under the furniture, however, that is not always possible.

Hey siriuskey, was just thinking about you and oklouise. We have finally moved in a week ago, and although the place still has a lot of finishing work to do, it functions so well. I love my ensuite which was just one of the things you both, and the other amazingly kind, smart and generous Houzzers, helped with so much. So thank you so very much. To your comment, I’d seen a few floor rugs at Bunnings but the range was very limited so hadn’t given it much thought. I’ll have to check out their website. As to style....something I don’t see everywhere, no fringe, blue or navy without any grey, not too fussy or too plain. You can see I’m a sad case in this respect :)
