Turning something that is run-down into an inviting space again is very rewarding. This is one of our favourite ever transformations in the Perth suburb of Mount Lawley: After - top storey addition, open plan living extension at the rear, indoor/outdoor living complete with an outdoor kitchen. Just stunning.

Mine has a sink, dishwasher, and pull out wastebins. All good. What I should have done was insist on more cutlery drawers and some pot drawers instead of under bench cupboards. Not a fan of underbench microwaves so didnt ask for one.

Just be aware that if it is allowed to grow too vigorously, then it may damage the timber fence (especially if it starts going between the slats or grows heavily in top). Ideally, a freestanding trellis structure would be used as a climbing frame. However, if both you and neighbour enjoy the plants then you are unlikely to have dramas over who pays for maintenance.

a see through roof above a vines would create a haven for bugs and mildew but, depending on the size of the available space and your local climate why can't you have a covered area closer to the house with a frame around the front and/or sides to support a climbing plant? ...a grape vine can produce fruit and be kept in check with careful pruning but unless you want all that work and a plant that can potentially take over the building there are many alternative climbing plants that can provide leafy shade and autumn colour...something like this?
